They would go on to pay for such familiar profligacy in the final third seen on countless occasions last season, with the fit-again Jamie Vardy rewarded for pushing for an unlikely start as the 37-year-old former England striker nodded home an equaliser totally against the run of play. Both sides had chances to win the match late on, with Vardy, Wilfred Ndidi and Richarlison all failing to notch that crucial second goal.

There were scary moments for Spurs late on in the East Midlands, with Rodrigo Bentancur receiving oxygen and lengthy treatment on the pitch before being stretchered off following a sickening clash of heads at a corner. Yves Bissouma puts Tottenham future in doubt after breaking Ange Postecoglou trust

Yves Bissouma likely has a lot of work to do to get back into this Tottenham team and indeed the good graces of his frustrated manager.

Spurs handed the Malian midfielder a one-match suspension last week after investigating footage the player uploaded to social media that appeared to show him inhaling nitrous oxide - AKA laughing gas - from a balloon.

Bissouma apologised and admitted that he had demonstrated a “severe lack of judgement”, with Ange Postecoglou later insisting that he has to rebuild some broken trust.

“There's a person involved, in this case it's Biss, and he's made a really poor decision," Postecoglou said at his pre-match press conference on Thursday.

“You want to understand that and want to try to help him through that and as a club what we can do to make sure he doesn't make those kind of choices and decisions in the future.

"With that context, there's still sanctions involved and some of those sanctions are education and giving him a clear understanding of how wrong it was. You always want to give people an opportunity to learn from their mistakes.

"The second part of that is he is a footballer for this club.

"He has responsibilities. He has responsibilities to the club, he has responsibilities to his team-mates, he has responsibilities to supporters and everyone associated with the club and he's failed in those duties. There's got to be sanctions for that.

"We've suspended him from Monday's game. Beyond that, there's some trust building that has to happen between Biss and me and Biss and the group. That's what he needs to work hard at from now on, to win that back.

"That's got nothing to do with one game. He may be suspended for one game but he has to earn that. The door is open for him and hopefully we can help him to realise that the decisions he makes impacts more than just him and allows him to make better decisions moving forward."

Leicester pay emotional tribute to late Craig Shakespeare

The former Leicester manager died earlier this month at the age of 60.

Ange Postecoglou believes that a return to full fitness will allow James Maddison to begin flourishing again in Tottenham colours.

"I haven't sat down with him but I don't know what a confidence player really means," the manager said.

"As a player, you've got to be on it all the time. You can't pick and choose. If you are physically fit and you get selected, you should be buzzing.

"I don't think with Madders, he certainly doesn't lack self-belief and he knows he can be a real dominant player. With Madders, a lot of it last year was the physical element.

"When he wasn't 100 per cent fit, then he couldn't really perform at the levels he wanted to. Even when he came back from injury, I never felt like he reached those physical levels he did earlier in the year.

"So, that's a real key for him. If he's training really well and in a good physical condition, then I think his game flows from that.

"He's definitely a player who can get punters off their seats. I think players feed off that as well.

"Yeah, it's important for us that he's playing at his best. I think he makes us a better team and a more dangerous team. Hopefully that's what we see."

James Maddison set for first Leicester return to start crucial season

Oliver Skipp might not be facing his old club tonight, but Harry Winks and James Maddison are both set to.

For Maddison in particular it will be a poignant evening as he returns to the King Power Stadium for the first time since his £40m departure last summer in the aftermath of Leicester’s shock relegation from the Premier League.

The 27-year-old made an initially storming start to his Tottenham career, until injury derailed his campaign and he then struggled for form before being cut from the final England squad for Euro 2024.

Ange Postecoglou evidently thinks that Maddison is primed for a strong bounce-back in what is a pivotal campaign for him.

"The good thing is he's fit and he's laid himself a good opportunity and foundation to have another strong season,” the Australian said.

"The disappointment of say missing the Euros, well that's just again part of being a footballer. We take all the good stuff, but you have setbacks and it's how you react to those.

"I'm sure he'll want to sort of go out there and get himself back into the international frame and get back playing for England.

"Again, that's up to him to kind of find the right way to use that as a motivation. If you just sort of deflect or at any point kind of say 'you know it had nothing to do with me,' then you miss an opportunity to improve.

"Yeah, I've sensed in Madders that he's come back, he's really determined to have a big season and hopefully that gets him back in the England frame, but more importantly for us hopefully gets him back to the form we know he can have."
