Wales outside-half Gareth Anscombe was yellow-carded for a "profanity-laden outburst" at English referee Ian Tempest.

Anscombe, who had impressed during Gloucester's comfortable win over Newcastle Falcons, was sent from the field by the angry official in the 51st minute after screaming and swearing at him. The number 10 let frustration get the better of him as a Gloucester attack broke down while the official was playing a knock-on advantage.

The Welshman appeared unhappy with a tackle from Sammy Arnold on Zach Mercer that saw the home team lose the ball.

Tempest immediately blew his whistle after cameras caught Anscombe remonstrating, telling him his behaviour was "unacceptable".

Tempest said: "Off you go. Off you go now!"

When Anscombe appeared to query what was unfolding, Tempest added: "What you just said to me. You know exactly what you just said."

He then explained to Gloucester captain Lewis Ludlow: "I've got a knock-on advantage, I've called him over and he's screamed and sworn at me. Yellow card, off he goes." TNT Sports commentators described the incident as a "profanity-laden outburst"

Anscombe did return to the field after 10 minutes but was soon replaced in the 70th minute.
