A good transfer window turns sour for West Ham United

It has certainly been an eventful transfer window for West Ham though it has not ended in happiness for the fans. We all expected this year’s transfer window to be different. Our last windows were very poor, for the most part, and it was time for this to change.

Let’s not forget that we did have a good start to the transfer window. We brought in four big-name players, all who have had experience in the Premier League. The aim was to sign players in key positions and we did get the deals done relatively quickly. This was a welcome change from previous years but the window has slowly turned sour.

How have our signings fared so far?

Javier Hernandez has shown his quality in our first three-games, already on two goals despite our poor form. Joe Hart has not been helped by our poor defence but we already know of his qualities whilst Pablo Zabaleta has been disappointing.

We knew the risk that we were taking with Marko Arnautovic when signing him and his red-card in our second game has certainly angered fans. On his return, he simply has to perform given his status and our current position.

The problem

But our first three-games in the Premier League this season has shown that there is still a lot of work to be done. Defence has been the main problem once again and we had to sign a new CDM. We have lacked someone who can dominate the midfield alongside being technically gifted and composed in midfield. We need someone that can lead and help protect a defence that has conceded ten goals in three games.

William Carvalho appeared to be the perfect man for this but the transfer window has ended and he is not at our club. This deal looked almost certain to go through given the reports but we now know that the club “simply did not have enough time to put the player through a medical” in the words of David Sullivan. A story far too familiar?

We’ve also been poor when it has come to our striking options in the past few years. Just look at last summer. And what happened on deadline day simply highlighted our need to sign a new striker. Diafra Sakho, according to Sky Sports News, had a medical at Rennes without West Ham’s permission. It is clear that he no longer wants to play for the club and with Andy Carroll struggling with injuries, we are only left with one striker. Should Hernandez get injured, we will be in serious trouble.
