Germany v Denmark LIVE: Final score and result after sublime Jamal Musiala strikes for Euro 2024 hosts

Germany advanced to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after an enthralling and fascinating contest against Denmark in Dortmund.

The hosts started as the more aggressive side and thought they had the opener when Nico Schlotterbeck headed home in the fourth minute. That goal was ruled out for an infringement in the box and Denmark had a reprieve.

They strengthened in the first half and were in the ascendancy when a rare thunderstorm called proceedings to a halt due to dangerous lightning. The match resumed and the team went into the break all square.

Denmark then struck first in the second half as Jaochim Andersen finished of a fortunate set piece routine only for VAR to rule him offside. Mere minutes later, Andersen was penalised for handling the ball in his own box and gave away a penalty.

Kai Havertz slotted it past Kasper Schmeichel and the hosts never looked back. Jamal Musiala added a second with a superb curling strike and Germany secured the win to reach the next round.

Jamal Musiala weathers mighty storm but Germany’s real Euro 2024 test is still ahead

22:44 , Mike Jones

On a night of stoppages, Germany almost stumble, but keep going. That was summed up and sealed by Jamal Musiala’s smooth run and finish after a performance that previously had so many rough edges.

That goal put a sheen on a match that had literally been so muddied, where Germany were somewhat fortunate to turn it all on two big decisions and a controversial Kai Havertz penalty.

Just moments after Joachim Andersen had a goal ruled out for a genuine toenail offside, the ball hit his stretched hand for the call that ultimately sent the hosts to a 2-0 win.

Ange Postecoglou defends Michael Oliver after dubious penalty call in Germany’s Euro 2024 win over Denmark

23:08 , Mike Jones

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou came to referee Michael Oliver’s defence after a number of VAR decisions influenced Germany’s 2-0 victory over Denmark in the last-16 at Euro 2024.

The hosts had a goal chalked off in the first half for an infringement in the build-up before Denmark saw their only goal ruled out by the semi-automated offside technology.

To make matters worse, goalscorer Joachim Andersen was punished a couple of minutes later for handball with VAR sending Oliver to the pitchside monitor where he awarded Germany a penalty that swung the momentum of the match.

Denmark have failed to win any of their last eight games at major competitions (D4 L4), with their last such victory coming in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 against the Czech Republic (2-1).

Ange Postecoglou had the strongest reaction to the penalty and offside calls saying: “My question is that we can’t see ball contact at that disallowed goal for Andersen. How do we know that’s right?

“That’s my problem all along, Michael Oliver isn’t making that decision. It’s not on Michael Oliver. Technology is supposed to be definitive.

“If I hear one more person say that VAR isn’t re-refereeing a game, I will blow up. This is not on Michael Oliver, we are criticising the technology.

“When the offside is that tight, I don’t know why it is being looked at. If we accept that we accept other two-minute delays for other incidents.”

Naturally most of the post match analysis has been about Germany’s penalty.

Roy Keane said: “I’m always critical of defenders coming out defending with their hands behind their back, but I see it. I feel for defenders. That’s not the game we grew up loving, these types of decisions. People tomorrow wouldn’t be waking up tomorrow saying ‘why is that not a penalty?’”

While Ian Wright added: “That as a handball will never ever sit well for me, I’m not sure why they’re going so deep into the science of it. The offside law for me has gone crazy.”

Germany have won three of their four games at Euro 2024, as many as in their previous 12 games across major competitions (World Cups/Euros), while 10 goals is their joint-most at a single edition of the Euros.

Viewers in the United Kingdom have enjoyed the input of a new voice on ITV’s coverage of Euro 2024 with Christina Unkel making a positive first impression.

American football watchers will be familiar with former top level official Unkel, who has been a regular part of CBS’ broadcasts of the sport over the last few years.

But the 37-year-old is a fresh face for most in the UK as ITV look to offer expert insight into the officiating at the tournament.

Euro 2024 Golden Boot standings: Jamal Musiala, Cody Gakpo and others battle to be top scorer in Germany

Europe’s best strikers are vying for individual honours as well as team success as they aim to top the scoring charts at Euro 2024.

The quadrennial continental tournament is currently taking place in Germany with many of the world’s top marksmen on show and battling it out for the Golden Boot.

Cristiano Ronaldo became the leading scorer in competition history with five goals at Euro 2020 taking his overall aggregate to 14 and sealing the Golden Boot in the process, as his assist saw him edge the comparatively unheralded Patrik Schick of the Czech Republic, who also netted on five occasions during the tournament.

Before Denmark get the match back underway, referee Michael Oliver calls over both captains and explains why there’s a pause. It seemed to be either a) a problem with the roof or b) more adverse weather on the way.

Euro 2024 match between Germany and Denmark suspended as thunderstorm strikes

21:23 , Mike Jones

The Euro 2024 knockout tie between Germany and Denmark was suspended on Saturday evening as a thunderstorm hammered the stadium in Dortmund with rain, hail and lightning.

English referee Michael Oliver stopped the action after 35 minutes and took the players off the field of play with the game 0-0.

As torrential rain fell at the Westfalenstadion, puncturing the stadium’s roof with waterfalls which crashed down in the stadium below, both sets of players stood at the edge of the pitch for a few moments before being led into the dressing rooms.

45+1 mins: There goes the whistle to end the first half and there’s nothing to separate the teams. It’s been entertaining and fascinating for a number of reasons not least the lightning storm above the stadium.

As it stands though Denmark have effectively kept Germany at bay.

Germany 0-0 Denmark

45 mins: Chance!

Denmark should be ahead. They work the ball quickly through midfield on the counter attack. One touch passes release Alexander Bah who gets caught by Antonio Rudiger just before he gets to the box.

Bah manages to poke the ball into the penalty area where Rasmus Hojlund arrives. Manuel Neuer sprints towards the ball and gets there just as Hojlund takes the shot.

The German goalkeeper gets a body block on the effort and keeps it out!

41 mins: Close!

Denmark work the ball across the pitch nicely and find Andreas Skov Olsen. He brings the ball into the box and slips it to Alexander Bah.

Bah looks to square the ball but gives it away. A strong press from Rasmus Hojlund wins the ball back but he’s panicked and smokes a shot into the side netting.

38 mins: Gundogan drives the ball through midfield but is tackled by a back tracking Rasmus Hojlund who commits a foul in the process.

The free kick is then played out to David Raum who sends a cross into the penalty area. The ball comes to Rudiger who flicks it on to Havertz with the striker bombing a header straight at Kasper Schmeichel who keeps it out!

Okay then.

Eight minutes or so to play (plus added time) until the end of the first half and another break in play. The rain has fully stopped with the adverse weather seemingly passed over the stadium.

This will be an annoying little session for the players as Michael Oliver gets the match going once more.

Over on ITV the pundits are discussing the action we’ve seen in the game so far. Ian Wright said: “It did look like a great start from Germany as they put Denmark under pressure.

“The Danes couldn’t keep the ball and you felt like the disallowed goal was the perfect time for them to score.”

Inside the tunnel, referee Michael Oliver is talking to other officials and is obviously trying to assess the situation in order to get the game going again.

Water is pouring down into the stadium now, very reminiscent to scenes at Old Trafford earlier this year. Supporters are wearing rain coats and ponchos.

Well, all except two who have gone shirtless and are dancing inside the makeshift waterfall.

26 mins: Musiala looks to dribble into the box from the left but gets dispossessed by a fine sliding tackle from Jannik Vestegaard. The match is settling down into a more sedate tempo.

Denmark are making a better go of things in midfield with Thomas Delaney and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg closing Ilkay Gundogan down nicely.

Germany 0-0 Denmark

20:22 , Mike Jones

23 mins: Close!

A hopeful long ball is exceptionally played over to Christian Eriksen who darts in behind Antonio Rudiger and brings the ball down with the most perfect of touches.

He shifts the ball around the defender but Rudiger manages to recover and get in the block!

He needed to stop that as it was heading for goal. Better from Denmark.

Germany 0-0 Denmark

20:20 , Mike Jones

20 mins: Denmark are really struggling to get a foothold in the match. When they get up the pitch Germany’s defensive line is on top of them quickly and there’s little room for the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen to operate.

It’s tough going but they’re slowly starting to settle.

17 mins: Christian Eriksen gets the chance to work the ball into the box from a free kick. He only pings it to Kai Havertz who clears the danger then feeds Leroy Sane for the counter attack.

11 mins: Save!

Kai Havertz rolls off the shoulder of Jaochim Andersen and sprints into the box as the ball is flicked over the top. The German striker hits a decent effort at goal but Kasper Schmeichel drops to the left and uses his body to turn the ball wide of the target.

Denmark are under the cosh here.

Germany will be tested by the Danes but the absence of Morten Hjulmand could be key.

It’s a knockout for Kane

18:50 , Mike Jones

Harry Kane may be England’s all-time leading goalscorer but his strike in the draw with Denmark was his first in the group stage of a major finals since the 2018 World Cup.

The England skipper, though, will be buoyed by his recent record once the business end of the tournament comes around and Southgate will be hoping history repeats itself.

He scored four in four at Euro 2020 as England were eventually beaten on penalties by Italy, and at the World Cup in 2022 he again drew a blank in the group stage before scoring two in two – although he did miss a penalty in the quarter-final defeat to France.

Southgate’s last stand?

18:40 , Mike Jones

Having led England into a fourth major tournament as manager, Gareth Southgate’s future remains uncertain – especially given the criticism he has faced in Germany.

He was jeered following the Slovenia game and had plastic beer cups thrown in his direction from fans frustrated by the performance.

It is a far cry from when Southgate guided England to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and the Euro 2020 final at Wembley three years ago and an exit at the hands of Slovakia would likely see his tenure come to an end.

Good memories in Dortmund

18:30 , Mike Jones

Germany have an impressive record in Dortmund.

They have scored 69 goals and conceded just 15 here. The only team to beat them in this stadium is Italy, during the Fifa World Cup semi-finals in 2006.

The last match they played here was a 2-1 win over France in September 2023.

Kasper Hjulmand previews the game:

18:20 , Mike Jones

Denmark’s head coach said yesterday: “At the start I considered Germany one of the favourites, and it’s too bad that they’re playing us tomorrow.

“They have quality and talent, and expressed themselves very well in the group. But we also have quality and talent, and they’ll have to be very, very good to beat us.

“We know the fans that travel to Dortmund will do their very best to inspire us. We will be ready for it.”

Pre-match thoughts from Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann:

18:10 , Mike Jones

“Denmark are a very well-organised team. There are phases where they are very aggressive defensively but then make great one-touch attacks.

“They have a lot of experienced players in the squad and a clear structure. It’s a tough opponent, for sure.

“The Dortmund stadium is usually very loud, and I have experienced it many times as an opposing coach. I hope we will have a similar noise coming from the stands tomorrow.”

Gareth Southgate once freed England’s players – now he risks suffocating them

18:00 , Mike Jones

When Gareth Southgate talks about being “very careful” not to go back to the old England “environment”, there are specific moments he is thinking of. One memory that stands out was when Southgate himself was picked to play midfield rather than centre-half for the infamous 1-0 defeat to Germany in 2000, which was the last match at the old Wembley.

He and Kevin Keegan — the manager about to resign due to how unenjoyable the job was — had been savaged for it before the game. It got worse afterwards.

Just a few months before that, Southgate’s usual centre-half partner Tony Adams had a specific message for newcomer Steven Gerrard. Adams went right up to the midfielder’s face and screamed “Are you f****** ready for this?!”

Bukayo Saka offer blunt response to suggestion he should be England’s left-back

17:50 , Mike Jones

Bukayo Saka has insisted he is not the answer to England’s left-back problem.

The Arsenal winger has operated as a left wing-back earlier in his career while Gareth Southgate has used Kieran Trippier out of position on the left of his defence in the extended absence of Luke Shaw.

Saka’s mentor Ian Wright has voiced his opinion that he could fill in to give England a natural left-footer and someone who can provide more attacking incision from defence.

Will Fullkrug start?

17:40 , Mike Jones

There has been plenty of discussion in Germany about striker Niclas Fullkrug and whether he could make his first start of the tournament in the last-16.

The Borussia Dortmund forward has played just 73 minutes so far Euro 2024 but has scored two goals and could come in for Kai Havertz especially with this match being played at his home gorund.

“I have not followed the discussion," said Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann, "We decide who will play. There are always discussions about everyone.

“We have enough expertise with our staff so we don’t need to follow the discussions to have a good solution."

Vestergaard relishing Denmark’s ‘underdog’ status

17:30 , Mike Jones

Denmark defender Jannik Vestergaard is confident his team is capable of beating Germany and potentially repeating their success from 32 years ago when the country won the tournament.

“We know that to win the tournament it would be a bit of an upset,” he said. “But we like being underdogs. Germany will be favourites, but we like being a bit of a pain to the opposition and playing to our strengths.”

Can Denmark repeat history?

17:20 , Mike Jones

The Danes have good memories about playing Germany in this competition. During the 1992 European Championship Denmark famously beat them 2-0 in the final and lifted the trophy for the first time.

The manager, Kasper Hjulmand, picked out the Euro 2024 hosts as one of the favourites to win the tourament before it began but he’ll be hoping to put an end to their chances tonight.

Both these sides are unbeaten so far but one of the teams must go home after this clash. Could Denmark possibly knock out the hosts?

Forget the ‘easy draw’ – Slovakia’s new approach brings a belief they can beat England

17:10 , Mike Jones

On Sunday, Slovakia take on England in the Round of 16 in Gelsenkirchen. An advance to the knockout stages – their second in eight years – is already a big success, but Slovakia feel there is more to achieve against a heavily criticised Gareth Southgate side.

That’s especially true after a surprising 1-0 win against Belgium, the Group E favourites, in their opening game of the tournament. After the match, Slovakia’s players danced and sang along to a popular folk song Macejko, Macejko with a huge group of travelling supporters in Frankfurt, among which sat former internationals Martin Skrtel and Jan Durica.

Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka praised the fans, calling them “fantastic” and said he heard them in the second half even though he was in front of the Belgian stand. Slovakia have managed to get supporters on their side again – and they will see there’s another struggling giant out there for the taking.

Cole Palmer ready to be England’s missing link in Slovakia showdown

17:00 , Mike Jones

Cole Palmer can seem like the missing link for England, the footballer who can give them something they are lacking. And as Gareth Southgate’s side still miss a left-footer who can play left-back, who is capable of contributing in the final third, there came an unexpected revelation. “My first position was left-back,” he said. Sensing a sudden excitement among his audience, the Chelsea winger was quick to add: “I am talking Under-10s. Under-10s! I have never played left-back since. I was tiny and I just got put left-back. Then when I was 12 I moved further and further up.”

But Palmer’s has been a career of unconventional moves, where he has been reinvented to ever greater effect. When he left Manchester City for Chelsea, he was not expecting a return of 22 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League alone. The man who turned Pep Guardiola down has been turned into a cause celebre, the player many want to add excitement to an uninspired international team.

Denmark’s route to last-16

16:50 , Mike Jones

Denmark have a tough task on their hands and if they fancy their chances of springing an upset they will need to improve on their group stage performances.

A member of the dull Group C gang, a positive for the Danes is that they have proven themselves a difficult team to beat with three draws in their three matches so far.

Christian Eriksen has rolled back the years and is now the focal point of the side while Jonas Wind and Rasmus Højlund are capable of causing problems for Germany’s defence.

These two teams have drawn three out of the last four games they have played which could mean the match heads into extra time and a possibly penalty shootout.

Germany’s route to last-16

Euro 2024 hosts Germany had a very strong Group A campaign comfortably beating Scotland and Hungary before a stoppage-time Niclas Fullkrug equaliser against Switzerland confirmed them as winners of their section.

Jamal Musiala, Toni Kroos and Florian Wirtz - to name just a few - have been star performers and in front of a partisan crowd in Dortmund, Julian Nagelsmann’s side will feel confident of defeating Denmark to reach a fourth Euros quarter-final out of the last five editions.

Forget the group stage – Euro 2024 starts now

Spain are the only top side at Euro 2024 largely satisfied with how their group stage went, but everyone else would still nod along to manager Luis De La Fuente’s message. That is to basically forget everything that has happened so far.

It’s a feeling deepened by the first real break of the tournament, following an intense start. After some squads packed three matches into eight days, teams like Austria now wait a full week for their next fixture. Managers have been glad of that, to the point it almost represents a break in the tournament, too.

“It is a new competition starting for us,” French manager Didier Deschamps said. It might almost be called the real European Championships now, right down to how it features just 16 teams in the way it used to. “We’ll see the real potential of every team,” De La Fuente added.

Predicted line-ups

Germany XI: Neuer; Kimmich, Schlotterbeck, Rudiger, Mittelstadt; Andrich, Kroos; Musiala, Gündogan, Wirtz; Havertz.

Denmark XI: Schmeichel; Andersen, Vestergaard, Christensen; Maehle, Delaney, Højbjerg, Kristiansen; Wind, Eriksen; Hojlund.

Early team news

15:59 , Sonia Twigg

For Germany, there may be two enforced changes at centre-back. Jonathan Tah is suspended, while Toni Rudiger is carrying a problematic thigh injury, so it remains to be seen if he’ll be fit.

There are no more injury concerns for the hosts, so don’t expect many more changes to the starting side. Niclas Fullkrug will likely have to settle for a place on the bench despite his goal against Switzerland, while players such as Leroy Sane don’t seem to have done enough to play themselves into the first eleven.

Denmark also have suspensions to contend with, as midfielder Morten Hjulmand will miss out. Thomas Delaney or Christian Norgaard could come in, but there likely won’t be many more changes as Denmark look to stifle Germany in a similar way to the game against England.

Germany vs Denmark

15:12 , Sonia Twigg

Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany side travel to Dortmund on Saturday, 29 June to face Denmark in the last 16 of Euro 2024.

The tournament hosts made a promising start to the competition with a 5-1 demolition of Scotland and an easy 2-0 win over Hungary, before faltering slightly in a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their final group game.

And they’ll be looking to put that match behind them with a more fluid attacking performance against a Denmark side that has been underwhelming so far. Kasper Hjulmand’s side managed to squeeze through in second place in Group C, after draws in each of their group games.

There’s plenty of talent in the Danish side, with veteran Christian Eriksen supported by Manchester United teammate Rasmus Hojlund and a defence with plenty of Premier League experience, but they haven’t managed to click in attack yet – that’ll have to change if they want to have any chance of booking a place in the quarter-finals.
