Former England manager Gareth Southgate would be the ideal replacement for Gary Lineker as host of BBC's Match of the Day.

That is the shock verdict of Southgate's former England team-mate Paul Gascoigne who believes Southgate and former England and Newcastle captain Alan Shearer should be in the running to replace Lineker.

Lineker announced on Tuesday that he will be stepping down from hosting the Premier League highlights programme at the end of the season, bringing to an end a 26-year run as host of the programme.

Southgate has been out of work since quitting as England boss after reaching the final of EURO 2024 in the summer and he has done TV work in the past having worked as a pundit for ITV Sport.

He was heavily linked with the Manchester United manager's job before Ruben Amorim's appointment but Gascoigne feels his future could be away from the dugout.

“With Lineker quitting Match of the Day, I wonder if Shearer is going to take over, or Southgate because he's been doing a little bit of commentary," Gascoigne told Sport Casting.

"I reckon Shearer will take over because he loves a bit of money. He's so tight he only cries from one eye! So for me it’s between Shearer and Southgate."

Lineker will continue to work with the BBC and will lead their coverage of the 2025/26 FA Cup and the 2026 World Cup.

Mark Chapman has been installed as the early betting favourite to replace Lineker, with Alex Scott, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan also high up in the betting.
