While Manchester City won't overhaul their squad in January, there are some key transfer decisions on the horizon in the summer transfer window.

With Pep Guardiola's future beyond this season far from certain and Hugo Viana replacing Txiki Begiristain as the club's sporting director, there could be a very new feel at the Etihad Stadium next summer.

But regardless of whether there's a new voice in the dugout, City have some decisions to take before the summer. As such, here is a look at four City players who are on notice ahead of the summer transfer window.

Ilkay Gundogan

Gundogan may have only rejoined City in the summer but he is yet to hit the heights of his first spell at the Etihad Stadium.

The former Barcelona midfielder returned in the summer on an initial one-year contract and there is perhaps an argument to be made that he needs to reach the levels of his first spell later this season to justify that stay being prolonged.

Gundogan is 34-year-old and it may be best for all parties if his second stay ends in the summer. With Kevin De Bruyne also out of contract in the summer, the Belgian's future will be a much more urgent priority for City to resolve than Gundogan's.

Kalvin Phillips

When Phillips joined City in the summer of 2022 from Leeds United, there was much optimism about what he would add to Guardiola's squad.

In truth, though, he has never been able to hit the standard City expected of him and a disastrous loan spell at West Ham United last season all but ended any chance of his City career being resurrected.

The England international midfielder has shown nothing in his current loan spell at Ipswich Town to change that perception and he will still have three years remaining on his City deal when he returns from Portman Road in the summer.

It is in the interests of all parties if Phillips can find a permanent home away from Manchester in the summer of 2025.

Yan Couto

Couto has impressed in loan spells away from City with Braga and Girona and last season he helped the Spanish side surprisingly qualify for this season's Champions League.

The Brazilian right-back's performances caught the eye of Borussia Dortmund who signed him on a season-long loan deal from City with an obligation to buy - if certain conditions are met.

Dortmund will pay €30million if those conditions are met which would spell the end of his time at City. If they aren't, it would likely be down to a lack of appearances at Dortmund. If that was the case, the chances of him jumping ahead of Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis in the pecking order would be slim at best.

Either way, his future lies away from the Etihad Stadium.

Maximo Perrone

Perrone may still only be 21 and only joined City 18 months ago from Velez Sarsfield, but he has played just 18 minutes of football for the club.

A season-long loan spell at Las Palmas last term has been followed by a loan move to Italian side Como. He has done little at either club to justify his inclusion into the City squad.
