Interim manager Lee Carsley signed off in style as England capitalised on Liam Scales’ sending off in a 5-0 thrashing of the Republic of Ireland that sealed promotion to the Nations League top tier.

But who impressed under Carsley’s tenure? Mike McGrath runs the rule over the Three Lions.

Jordan Pickford

Dropped for Finland after poor display at home to Greece but showed class with saves in Athens. His appearances makes him equal with Gordon Banks’ 75 caps and should win more under Thomas Tuchel. 7/10

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Carsley made it clear he sees him at right-back and gave him licence to be a playmaker in that role, often “inverted”. But he also filled in at left-back and his set-pieces and passing are important. 8/10

Levi Colwill

Vote of confidence picking him at left-back in opener against Ireland but was part of shaky back line against Greece despite stunning goal-line clearance. One of the dropouts for final camp. 4/10

Tino Livramento

Given his debut in Carsley’s final match and was part of a solid back line. Also set up a goal for his Newcastle team-mate Anthony Gordon. Has done his chances no harm. 6/10

Marc Guehi

Looked good when on the pitch for Carsley – in fact, he never gets himself in trouble. When he was absent, against Greece, the back line looked worse for it. 8/10

Harry Maguire

Played in opening win over Ireland in Dublin but dropped for the October internationals and has not played since due to injury. Was picked due to previous work with England and now has to prove himself to Tuchel. 4/10

John Stones

Injured for current camp but previously played in four Carsley games, starting three. Struggled against Greece at Wembley, good presence for other games. 5/10

Jack Grealish

Centre of club-v-country row and whether he was fit for this call-up. Played very well in Ireland and Helsinki and missed the terrible Greece defeat. 7/10

Eberechi Eze

Important part of Euro squad but dropped for October camp after two sub appearances at start of Carsley’s reign when he was not given long to impress. 3/10

Declan Rice

Different role in Finland when he was more attacking, having scored in Dublin pushing forward. He was overrun by the Greeks at Wembley, then among the injured for the return fixture. 7/10

Kobbie Mainoo

Played well in Carsley’s opener but was injured and had to pull out of the October camp, allowing others their chance in central midfield. Still not back for Manchester United. 4/10

Morgan Gibbs-White

Surged forward in Athens to set up final goal having made his senior England debut in Carsley’s first match as interim. 6/10

Harry Kane

Shock omission for Athens win having missed the defeat to the Greeks at Wembley. Performed well in his 100th England appearance, against Greece, and scored penalty against Ireland – but quiet moments as well. 7/10

Jarrod Bowen

Scored with first touch against Ireland after call-up for cover having been dropped for the October internationals. Only sub appearances but good impact with his goal. 6/10

Anthony Gordon

Important player for Carsley after helping him with Under-21 Euros. He started in four matches after being overlooked by Gareth Southgate. Looked lively on left wing and took goal well in final game before Tuchel starts. 7/10

Angel Gomes

Looked very assured in his starts, both against Finland, when he could dictate pace of game in front of defence. Came off bench against Ireland when game was won. 5/10

Bukayo Saka

Suffered injury against Greece and was injured for the current camp. So can only be judged on first two matches when he looked threatening despite some rough treatment. 6/10

Rico Lewis

Will be useful to Tuchel for his versatility. Played both full-back roles including the problem left-back position and “inverted” into midfield. But guilty of error for Greece winner. 6/10

Ezri Konsa

Solid performances in starts against Finland and Greece before injury cut his evening short in Athens. Good option at centre-back going forward after stepping in when needed at the Euros. 7/10

Noni Madueke

Given his first opportunity at senior level by Carsley and took his chance. Very direct play from the right wing and was among the best players in vital Athens win, lively against Ireland. 7/10

Ollie Watkins

One start, one goal. Carsley really wanted to give the Aston Villa striker a reward for his season and he grabbed the opener against Greece. Needs to be a Plan B without Kane and he is an option. 6/10

Cole Palmer

The Premier League’s best current player was a victim of Carsley trying to fit all his attacking players into the team against Greece. Injured for first and last camp. Will have a fresh start in 2025. 4/10

Jude Bellingham

Clearly an important player for Tuchel, carrying England forward from midfield. He needs to cut out the yellow cards for dissent but the attacks will go through him. Two assists against Ireland. 7/10

Phil Foden

Only started in the Greece defeat when he was a false nine in a 4-4-2 which simply did not work. Has been unlucky again with injuries and will look to get regularly available under Tuchel. 3/10

Dominic Solanke

Provided assist when he came off the bench against Greece, his second England cap some seven years after his first. Used off the bench against Irish. 5/10

Dean Henderson

Given a surprise chance in Helsinki and performed well – no chance with their goal. Carsley wanted to give another keeper a chance rather than rely solely on Pickford. 5/10

Kyle Walker

Not on top form in stop-start season that included picking up a knee problem when he played against Finland. Could step in at left-back and centre-back. 5/10

Conor Gallagher

Tapped in against Ireland for first England goal to wrap up good final camp having been barely used in the previous two. 6/10

Lewis Hall

Will be happy with England debut against Greece, playing well in second half, and his first start in the win against Ireland. Option for problem position for England. 6/10

Morgan Rogers

Just two sub appearances for the Aston Villa midfielder but he has made a positive impression with his forward running. 5/10

Curtis Jones

Big moment to give him England debut in must-win game in Athens but rewarded with performance and goal, then kept his place for the Ireland win. 7/10

Taylor Harwood-Bellis

Fantastic finish with header on his debut. Carsley had promised him be would get into the England team after winning the Under-21 Euros – and he was good to his word with a cap against Ireland. 6/10
