England v Slovenia LIVE: Result and reaction after struggling Three Lions booed off at Euro 2024
England finished top and Slovenia also advanced to the knockout stages of Euro 2024 after an uninspiring 0-0 draw in their final Group C match on Tuesday.
England had already qualified for the round of 16 and, despite another flat performance, the draw leaves them in first place in the group on five points.
Slovenia finished level on three points with Denmark, who drew 0-0 with Serbia, and though they had the same goal difference, goals scored and disciplinary record, the Danes appeared to have advanced in second place due to their UEFA ranking, going through with Slovenia, subject to confirmation.
England had the best of the action in a tepid game of few real chances, with Harry Kane and Phil Foden forcing easy saves from goalkeeper Jan Oblak and Bukayo Saka having a goal ruled out in the first half for offside.
England dominated possession but had few shots on target as Slovenia defended resolutely and tried to crowd out every attack from their frustrated opponents.

Gareth Southgate in his post-match news conference:
23:10 , Mike Jones
“We have made England over the last three or four years fun again. I think it has been enjoyable for the players and we have got to be very, very careful that it stays that way.
“They (fans) were brilliant, in the second half especially there was a constant noise around the team. I get it that they are not happy with me, that is the reality, I am not going to back away from that. I need them behind the team.
“I have to deal with what I am dealing with. I was not going to back away from going over to thank people for coming and giving the support that they did, but I know that this is causing an issue for the group.
“I can deal with that but I need them to support the players. The more the fans are like they were in the second half, behind the team it is a massive lift for them, because we are operating in a very, very unusual environment.”
Nobody told Austria this was the group of death – they’ve reshaped the map of Euro 2024
23:10 , Mike Jones
If this was supposed to be the group of death, no one told Austria. Ralf Rangnick’s endearing underdogs have reshaped the draw, and perhaps the destiny, of Euro 2024 by topping it.
They beat Netherlands. More than that, though, they blitzed them; fearless and ferocious, Austria recovered from conceding two equalisers to condemn the Dutch to defeat courtesy of Marcel Sabitzer’s terrific finish.
They head to Leipzig as group winners. Netherlands, their qualification already assured, nonetheless stumbled from first to third on an eventful afternoon. It is Gelsenkirchen for them.

Southgate speaking about cups being thrown and jeers at the end of the game:

“I understand it. I’m not going to back away from it. The most important thing is the supporters stay with the team.
“I understand the narrative towards me and that’s better for the team than it being towards them. But it is creating an unusual environment to operate in. I’ve not seen any other team qualify and receive similar.
“I understand it, I’m not going to back away from it, but I’m very proud of the players for how they’re operating within it.”

When the mask fell, there was no hero in sight. Instead, France’s worst fear presented himself – a man struggling with the expectation of a nation on his shoulders.
With top spot in Group D up for grabs in the scorching Ruhr Valley heat, Kylian Mbappe, who completed the Ninja Turtle look by sporting a mask to protect his broken nose, stayed calm as he slotted home from the penalty spot in the second half, putting France seemingly on course for a comfortable victory over a Poland side with nothing to play for.

Gareth Southgate speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live:

“We totally dominated the game, particularly second half. We had them pinned in for long, long periods. I was pleased that we had the composure not to get anxious.
“We know what the last week or so has been like and in those moments when everyone is desperate for the win you begin to use the ball not so patiently and find yourselves in trouble.
“Really pleased with the impact of all the players that came into the game. Of course we would have like a couple of goals to send everyone home happy but that wasn’t to be tonight.
“That was not for the want of trying by the players, we just lacked that finishing touch. The final touch or pass let us down a bit a few times.”
England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo speaking to ITV:
22:52 , Mike Jones
“Slovenia sat deep and are a good side on the ball but I think we have the quality to break these teams down as the levels get higher the deeper we go into the tournament.
“He’s [Cole Palmer] electric and you’ve seen in the Premier League what he can do and he’s continuing to do that. He’s one of the best in training, he’s never eased off the gas.”
Denmark miss out on chance to top Group C as Serbia exit Euro 2024 after stalemate
22:48 , Mike Jones
Denmark ground out the goalless draw they needed against Serbia to clinch second place in Group C and advance to the knockout stages of Euro 2024.
Rasmus Hojlund missed the best chance for the Danes while Serbia - who needed a win to stand any chance of qualifying - left it too late and slid out of the tournament with a single point to their name.
Aleksandar Mitrovic slid a late chance wide and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic could only strike tamely at Kasper Schmeichel in injury time as their inevitable late surge came to nothing in Munich.

Slovenia coach Matjaz Kek t the press conference: “I didn’t quite expect us to be going through. We showed with our play that we deserve to go through. We were playing one of the favourites for the tournament today. Thank you to all the fans and maybe there was a bit of luck involved but our fans had our back.
“Throughout the whole day, I have felt positive and we showed mental fortitude tonight. We analysed them but when we became passive we had problems. England had a great opportunity in the 90th minute but Jan hasn’t had that much work. We played a very strong team and I emphasise again the mental fortitude of this young team.
“They have shown their true colours. You have to understand that English players play every three or four days but many of ours don’t play such high-stakes games in such a short timeframe. I am very proud of this team.”

More from Gareth Southgate: “We have got to play well and whoever we play is going to be a really tough game. We shouldn’t be seduced by which half of the draw.
“So many things are starting to come together. We had a lot of issues before the tournament. I think the way the defence has played has been a huge positive and something to build on.
“We created chances but we just have to convert those chances.”

Forever going in the same cycles, England’s biggest problem is now the easiest to solve
22:34 , Mike Jones
After about an hour on a hot, sticky night in Cologne, the England football team fans behind Jordan Pickford’s goal launched into a chant to the tune of the Great Escape, led by a banging drum and bellowed out with a renewed sense of purpose.
When it reached the end, they started again, repeating themselves for at least 15 minutes, going in the same cycles, sticking to the same rhythm in an endless drone. In a way, it was a fitting tribute to the players in front of them, given that was how England performed in this dismal 0-0 draw against Slovenia.
For a while, it was heart-warming stuff from the travelling number, a determination to enjoy themselves and provide their own entertainment even when Gareth Southgate’s failed side could not. There was a gallows humour to it, nothing else for it than pretending England were winning.

England played out a drab 0-0 draw with Slovenia in Cologne as Group C concluded on a stifling night in north Germany.
The Three Lions got off to a slow start, with a largely uneventful first half offering up one dangerous delivery from Kieran Trippier and a disallowed goal after some invention from Phil Foden.
The lack of tempo, movement and creativity continued in the second half even with the addition of Kobbie Mainoo and then Cole Palmer, with England struggling to create clear-cut chances across the entirety of the 90 minutes.

The 0-0 score is likely to heap more pressure and questions on Gareth Southgate after England’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark last week.
England, runners up in 2020, have been widely criticised following an unconvincing start to a tournament they are among the favourites to win.
They bossed possession against Slovenia but were unable to turn their dominance into victory in Cologne.

Here’s England defender John Stones who empathises with the fans’ frustration but is happy that the Three Lions achieved their goal of topping Group C.
He told ITV: “The objective was to top the group and we have done that - it is not always going to be an easy road. It is not going to be easy when we have a target on our back to beat us.
“I thought there was a lot of improvement from the other two games, we found people in the pockets and created more chances - another step in the right direction.
“I can get the fans frustration not taking chances, but that is football - it is never an easy game.”
Boring England suffer again and only one thing can salvage Euro 2024 bid

Declan Rice had said before this game that it might only take one match to transform England’s tournament and that might now be true… although not because of anything Gareth Southgate’s side actually did.
They again didn’t do much at all. They still somehow find themselves on the more forgiving side of the Euro 2024 draw due to results elsewhere. Southgate won’t have to worry about any of Germany, Spain, Portugal or France until the final… if they make it that far.
That is why that run can be a negative, too. Such an opportunity potentially brings more pressure, for a team that barely look like beating anybody right now.

It hasn’t been pretty, it hasn’t been easy to watch. England are three games into their Euro 2024 campaign and so far the biggest discussions have centred over which players need to come out of the starting lineup, why the team can’t press, who isn’t fit, which former internationals are most angry and why, yet again, it’s almost certainly not coming home.
A narrow and nervy win over Serbia was followed by a tame and fortunate draw with Denmark. On Tuesday night, Group C came to a conclusion with a truly dismal goalless draw against Slovenia, leaving England short on inspiration and goalscoring form, but top of the quartet and safely through to the last 16.

Serbia v Denmark has finished goalless meaning England go through as group winners.
Denmark finish second with Slovenia third and both sides go through.
There’s a particular quirk to this though as Denmark and Slovenia finished level on points, goal difference, goals scored and disciplinary record (6-6 on yellow cards).
To decide who came second meant looking at which team had the best qualifying record,
Denmark finished above Slovenia in the same qualifying group and go through on a head-to-head record after both sides finished qualifying on the same amount of points as well.

The questions Gareth Southgate had coming into this match remain. England don’t know their best starting XI but there were some positive signs.

There are slim positives but things need to improve rapidly ahead of the last-16.

Our chief football writer Miguel Delaney has the latest from Cologne:
Mainoo had at least helped bring what felt like England's only extended spell of control in the tournament so far, but Slovenia dug in. They were under pressure but England just didn't have the inspiration to open them up. Put bluntly, although England were a bit better, they lacked creativity, pace and width. Basically, everything you need. Southgate did attempt to remedy one of those by finally bringing on Cole Palmer, to raucous cheers. Slovenia currently look more comfortable, though.

86 mins: Trent Alexander-Arnold comes on for England and slots into the right-back position. Kyle Walker has switched over to left-back with Kieran Trippier taken off by Gareth Southgate.

A drastic move from Gareth Southgate as the England manager hooks Conor Gallagher at half-time and brings on Kobbie Mainoo. Gallagher was asked to play a very different role to Trent Alexander Arnold and stayed high and within England’s inside-right, to the extent that he barely saw the ball in the first 45. Mainoo seems to have come on with new instructions: . Even within the first few moments here, the teenager is drifting around and popping up in different positions.
Gary Neville criticises ‘basic’ England after drab first half against Slovenia
21:03 , Mike Jones
England were criticised for a “basic” and disjointed performance in the first half of their final Group C match against Slovenia at Euro 2024.
Aside from a few Harry Kane shots from distance - and a Bukayo Saka tap-in which was ruled out for offside in the buildup - the Three Lions rarely threatened, looking comfortable in possession but not taking the game to Slovenia with any great regularity.
Ange Postecoglou suggested England’s desire to press more in their third game was being hampered by the fact they actually had domination of the ball, and mooted his belief that the latest midfield iteration - Conor Gallagher having replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold in the starting XI - was not quite of the right balance.

There were a fair few boos at half-time from the England end. It really hasn't improved much from the previous games. There are so few connections. Slovenia really fancy this, as visible in how they are going into 50-50s. Phil Foden and Declan Rice are the only two England players really making anything happen. Harry Kane looks so leaden.

A few jeers from the England end at half-time, which came as England had the ball. Would it have ended with anything? Probably not, given how tepid and predictable their play has been in the opening 45. Slovenia, in their 4-4-2, are offering gaps to England but there are often so many players crowding the space. They desperately need some proper width.

Quite an uncertain start for England. Conor Gallagher's inclusion hasn't solved much as he isn't really showing for the ball. Slovenia clearly fancy something here. That could be seen in how Stojanovic beat Trippier to a 50-50 and then beat him to the ball. It hasn't convinced yet.

Our sports reporter Jamie Braidwood has the latest from Cologne:
England needed a reaction but after 15 minutes it’s arguably even… worse? So many of the connections within this structure look broken when England are on the ball, as evidenced by a number of passes that have been off target so far. Slovenia look solid in their shape, and are finding it pretty easy to cut through England too.

3 mins: England’s players spoke about pressing up the pitch and there’s an early display as Harry Kane sprints to close down goalkeeper Jan Oblak with Phil Foden pushing up on Vanja Drkusic as Slovenia attempt to play out from the back.
Decent work off the ball from the Three Lions.
