England’s Euro 2024 squad LIVE: Latest news as Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire miss tournament
Jack Grealish and James Maddison have been cut from England’s Euro 2024 squad with Gareth Southgate opting for emerging talent over established names.
Harry Maguire could not recover from injury in time to play in Germany, leaving the Three Lions vulnerable at the back.
Liverpool’s Curtis Jones was also cut, while his club teammate Jarell Quansah also failed to make the final squad. The pair were surprise inclusions in the 33 and were not given minutes against Bosnia to fight for their place. Brenford striker Ivan Toney survived the final cut, but Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford drops out.

Is England vs Iceland on TV? Channel, kick-off time and how to watch Euro 2024 warm-up tonight
14:04 , Sonia Twigg
England host Iceland in an international friendly on Friday in what will be their final warm-up match before flying to Germany for Euro 2024. Gareth Southgate’s squad board the plane on Monday and will have a week to acclimatise to their base camp ahead of their first match of the tournament versus Serbia.
The England boss has already announced the squad that will take part in the competition with James Maddison is one of the bigger names to miss out. Jack Grealish’s omission meanwhile took most people by surprise while Harry Maguire hasn’t recovered from injury in time to feature.
The Three Lions took on Bosnia and Herzegovina earlier this week running out 3-0 winners at St. James’ Park with goals for Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Kane. An experimental line-up saw Alexander-Arnold start alongside Conor Gallagher in midfield but it is expected Southgate will go with a more traditional looking side against Iceland to get some playing time in for his first choice picks.

Missing out
James Trafford
The Burnley goalkeeper and England Under-21 international was called up to the senior squad following an injury to Sam Johnstone in March, even though he had just been dropped by club manager Vincent Kompany. Trafford failed to win back his place at Burnley and that cost him a spot at the Euros.
Jarrad Branthwaite
The Everton centre-back has been impressive all season at the heart of Sean Dyche’s defence, with composure on the ball that belies his 21 years. But Branthwaite did not get the chance to make his England debut after receiving his first senior England call up for March’s friendlies, and is one for the future in Southgate’s eyes.
Jarell Quansah
The Liverpool centre-back has impressed in his breakout season, slotting in seamlessly alongside more experienced defenders, but didn’t make the final cut.
Harry Maguire
The Manchester United defender is one of Southgate’s most trusted players. A lack of playing time for his club had brought scepticism from fans and the media about his role this summer, but Maguire re-established himself in Erik ten Hag’s first team. However, a calf injury has ruled him out of contention.
Ben White
The Arsenal defender left the 2022 World Cup for personal reasons and has not returned to the England setup. Southgate revealed that White “doesn’t want to be considered for England squads at this time”, and the right-back did not change his mind before the Euros.
Reece James
The full-back is one of the best in the world when in full flight but his lack of consistent fitness is a concern. He needed to return with a strong run of performances to finish the season but that never materialised after a red card against Brighton in Chelsea’s penultimate game.
Ben Chilwell
The Chelsea left-back didn’t play a single minute at the last Euros and watched on as Shaw, and occasionally Trippier, filled that spot. Chilwell was a little unconvincing during the March friendlies and then picked up another problem in an injury-hit campaign, missing Chelsea’s run-in – before he was left out of England’s training squad.
Jordan Henderson
The midfielder was booed by England fans in last year’s internationals at Wembley following his move to the Saudi Pro League but that only seemed to strengthen Southgate’s loyalty to the player. Henderson hoped his push for a place on the plane was boosted after a return to European football with Ajax. However, his England career could be over after missing out on the Euros’ training squad.
Curtis Jones
Jones started the season well and was playing regularly in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield before injury struck, and he became more of a bit-part player in the second half of the campaign. On Wednesday the 23-year-old was told he would not make the final selection.
Kalvin Phillips
Phillips was another firm favourite with the England manager but has not shown his best over the past 18 months. A red card while on loan at West Ham brought criticism, and a hamstring injury ended his spell in east London prematurely. Even if fit, Phillips hasn’t found the form to earn a place on the plane.
James Maddison
The midfielder struggled with an injury at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar which prevented him from making an appearance, and although he earnt a place in England’s training squad for these Euros, he has been cut from the final squad and departed the camp.
Jack Grealish
Grealish took time earning Southgate’s approval but, at 28 and with a treble on his CV, became a regular squad member. However, the winger started only one of Manchester City’s last seven league matches, and the England manager admitted that a lack of consistent game time was a concern.
Marcus Rashford
The Manchester United forward is the third-highest goalscorer of the Southgate era with 16, behind only Kane and Raheem Sterling. But his poor club form this season raised questions while others like Palmer, Gordon and Bowen push for places, and he has been left out of the training squad, with Southgate saying he simply hasn’t played well enough to earn a spot.
Jadon Sancho
The Manchester United winger has rebounded during a loan spell at Borussia Dortmund and will be one of only two Englishmen in the Champions League final, up against Real Madrid’s Bellingham. But it has been three years since his last international cap and he did not win a recall.
Raheem Sterling
The Chelsea winger was not involved in recent camps, and although his form showed signs of promise earlier in the campaign, it was not enough to oust any of the new generation.

Forwards
Anthony Gordon
The Newcastle winger is enjoying a fine season at St James’ Park and his flurry of goal involvements makes a compelling case. Gordon earned his senior debut against Brazil and looked sharp, and the increase in tournament squad size from 23 players to 26 played in his favour in a competitive area of the pitch.
Phil Foden
Foden enjoyed his best season yet in a Manchester City shirt, becoming a talisman for the club that delivers time and again. He will be 24 when the Euros come around and is increasingly essential to Pep Guardiola’s City team, as well as England. His velcro control is unique in the national squad and Southgate’s only conundrum is where to fit Foden’s attacking talents into a team containing Bellingham, Saka and more.
Bukayo Saka
Saka is fast becoming a senior England player despite being only 22, and is set for a key role at Euro 2024. He has produced another excellent season for Arsenal, with 20 goals and 14 assists from 47 games, and Saka will be first choice on England’s right wing in Germany.
Jarrod Bowen
Bowen had an excellent season for West Ham and showed bright attacking intent in his England caps to date.
Cole Palmer
Chelsea’s talisman won the Premier League’s young player of the year award after scoring 26 goals and racking up 15 assists in all competitions. Palmer has two England caps, although a minor injury scuppered his chances of showing what he can do during March’s internationals. He played and scored against Bosnia, while those four goals against Everton in April underlined the point.
Ollie Watkins
Watkins has been sensational since Unai Emery took over as Aston Villa manager last year, and the striker will fill the role of Kane’s deputy at the Euros after finishing the Premier League season with the most assists (13) and joint-fourth most goals (19).
Harry Kane
England’s captain remains their talisman on the pitch, both with his leadership and with his goals in a record-breaking debut season at Bayern Munich, even if it was also a trophyless one. The only concern is fitness after a back injury prevented Kane from playing in Bayern’s final game of the season, but he came off the bench to score against Bosnia.
Ivan Toney
The Brentford striker initially returned from a betting ban with four goals to put himself back in Southgate’s thoughts, and earned an immediate recall to the squad for March’s friendlies, where he scored a penalty against Belgium. He is probably the third-choice striker behind Kane and Watkins.

Midfielders
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Alexander-Arnold has struggled to get games for England at right-back, but a switch into midfield has seen him more involved for his country. The Liverpool vice-captain offers unique creativity as well as pinpoint set-piece delivery and could be an option alongside Rice as a deep-lying midfielder.
Jude Bellingham
The 20-year-old has quickly elevated himself to be one of England’s essential players. He is consistently producing outstanding performances both for his country and his club, Real Madrid, racking up goals and assists after driving runs from midfield. Southgate likes to use Bellingham as a No 10 playing off Harry Kane, and that is likely to be his primary role at the Euros.
Declan Rice
Rice has been one of Arsenal’s outstanding players this season, and his importance at international level has grown immeasurably over the past few years to the point where he is crucial to how England play. After Kane, Rice is arguably England’s hardest player to replace.
Conor Gallagher
Gallagher has been bright and energetic in his cluster of England caps and is clearly valued by the manager. He seems to have done enough to usurp more well-established internationals and regular starts for Chelsea this season have helped him win selection for the Euros in a position where England lack depth.
Kobbie Mainoo
Mainoo has had an impressive breakthrough year at Manchester United after graduating from the club’s academy, and the teenager reproduced that form in his first senior start for England against Belgium. Mainoo played himself into the Euros squad – and perhaps even the starting XI.
Adam Wharton
The Crystal Palace midfielder has been a crucial part of Palace’s team after a £22.5m move from Blackburn in January, and Southgate has recognised his progress with a place in England’s training squad. The box-to-box midfield position is one where England lack competition, and Southgate was impressed after Wharton’s brief debut against Bosnia.
Eberechi Eze
Another Palace player in form, Eze finished the season strongly as the attacking fulcrum of the team, but he may find there is too much competition for places among England’s advanced midfielders when it comes to winning a spot at Euro 2024. Eze was excellent against Bosnia and sealed his spot.

Defenders
John Stones
The Manchester City defender has been a stalwart for Southgate over the years, integral to deep runs at the 2018 World Cup and the last Euros, and the lack of centre-back alternatives only strengthens his position in the squad. Stones has struggled for fitness at times, but finished the season on the City bench and still has time to sharpen up before the tournament.
Kyle Walker
Experience, recovery pace and an ability to play on the right of a back three all make the Manchester City captain an essential part of Southgate’s plans. Only Maguire and Kane and have won more than Walker’s 61 caps since the manager took charge in 2016.
Kieran Trippier
One of Southgate’s favourites, Trippier is likely to be part of the squad for his experience, versatility and his set-piece delivery. His form for Newcastle this season has not been to his typical high standards and he had battled injury over the past two months, but Trippier returned for the final games of the season and will go to Germany this summer, where he may be deployed at left-back.
Lewis Dunk
Brighton’s captain had to wait five years for his second international cap but has enjoyed a flurry of chances under Southgate in the past 12 months. Dunk’s aerial dominance and ball-playing ability, honed at Brighton under Roberto De Zerbi, are valuable traits at centre-half, one of England’s most uncertain positions. A costly mistake against Belgium raised fresh doubts over his ability to step up to international football, but he has made the squad.
Marc Guehi
The Crystal Palace defender is highly rated by the England coaching team and, at 23, could be a future cornerstone of the back line. Centre-back is a position that’s still up for grabs at Euro 2024 and Guehi has a real chance, especially after starts in qualifying. But a recent knee injury required surgery, so Guehi’s first start since January – against Aston Villa on the final day of the season – boosted his hopes as he made the cut.
Joe Gomez
The 26-year-old defender has been a semi-regular fixture in the Liverpool side since early December and his versatility has helped earn a place in the England squad, with the ability to cover at both centre-back and full-back.
Ezri Konsa
Konsa is a vital part of an impressive Aston Villa team under Unai Emery. He played in England’s friendly against Brazil in March, and will travel to Germany as a back-up centre-half with the versatility to play right-back too.
Luke Shaw
When fit, Shaw is the preferred left-back in this England team, bringing attacking threat on the overlap. But he has spent most of the season out with a leg injury, before a hamstring strain ended his campaign early. Southgate opted to include Shaw in the 33-man training squad, but the race is on to be fully fit in Germany.

Goalkeepers
Jordan Pickford
The Everton goalkeeper has been England’s No 1 for a long time and that position is safe – despite a poor error in the March friendly against Belgium – particularly given the way his closest challenger, Aaron Ramsdale, was usurped by David Raya at Arsenal this season.
Aaron Ramsdale
The goalkeeper lost his battle for a starting place at Arsenal with David Raya, but even so, he is going to the Euros as Pickford’s deputy.
Dean Henderson
Henderson stood in for the injured Sam Johnstone at Crystal Palace in the final two months of the season, and was part of their impressive seven-game unbeaten run to end the campaign. He will now fill Johnstone’s spot as England’s third-choice goalkeeper at the Euros.

Gareth Southgate will submit the Engand squad for Euro 2024 on Friday night, before its official announcement on Saturday.
The manager is cutting a raft of high-profile names include James Maddison, Jack Grealish and the injured Harry Maguire when he names his final 26 players, having already axed Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson and Ben Chilwell from his training squad.
Emerging talent such as Adam Wharton, his Crystal Palace teammate Eberechi Eze and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon are all set to make the final squad.
England beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-0 St James’ Park on Monday, and will play Iceland at Wembley on Friday in their last warm-up before the tournament. The squad must be submitted to Uefa by midnight after the game, before the Football Association announces the 26 who made the cut for the European Championship in Germany the following day.
Gareth Southgate promises ‘different’ England after ruthless Euro 2024 squad decisions

Friday night’s match against Iceland will now be the team’s send-off, and Southgate confirmed that Aaron Ramsdale will start.
“There are clearly relationships that you want to build. There are decisions we are making on who plays when because there are some players who reported later than others so some needed the first game and we needed to get others into the second game. There is still a mix. Some are still not quite ready to start. It is not quite as simple as just playing the team for Serbia and we still have a week to work that out.”

Southgate said that there was a feeling of disappointment around the squad on Thursday, but that he planned to get all the staff together that evening to talk through and also draw a line for the tournament going forward.
“Firstly that gives us the focus for the game [against Iceland on Friday] and then when everybody comes back on Sunday night or Monday we can really start to think about the tournament.”
Southgate played down the relative youth of the squad, despite half the picks for the backline facing their first tournament. That only puts greater importance on Harry Kane as a senior figure. While the selection of both Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney has raised questions on the Bayern Munich striker’s fitness, given he has barely played since May, Southgate insisted that wasn’t part of it.
“No… I think we’re conscious that, with 26, if you had a problem with Harry, then to only have one alternative, you could run into trouble, and the two guys give very different styles of play, different attributes, similar to the sort of seven, 10, 11 positions behind, we wanted different profiles, we had the opportunity to take the numbers to do that, so we thought they were good options to have.
“There’s no doubt that the senior boys who have gone today are big characters but we still have big characters and we have guys who are going to emerge in the coming weeks.”

“I spoke to some of the boys last night and some today. As early as we were able to once we had made decisions. Once we had made clear decisions we tried to make those decisions as quickly as we could really.
“There were one or two injury things that we had to confirm through training just to be certain. As I said I tried to tell them all as early as I could. I knew exactly last night where we were with James [Maddison] and didn’t want him to be hanging on and training when I knew I could tell him. I couldn’t do that with Jack until this morning…”
When asked about Grealish’s wider form, Southgate said: “I don’t think today would be a good day to talk about the bigger picture. I don’t think that would be fair. I have just delivered a really difficult conversation to a lad who is devastated. I think the world of him as a kid. Yes. I am not going to go any broader than that.”

When asked about the loss of Maguire at set-pieces, Southgate replied: “We’ll be different, we’ll have to find different strategies, different ways of working, Harry’s consistently been one of our main first contacts from set-plays but we have got other options within that, but we have got other opportunities to be creative in our set-plays as well.”
Southgate’s decision on Grealish ultimately came down to the fitness of other players, particularly Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon. Once the England staff had sufficient information on Thursday morning, however, it was decided not to extend the situation much longer. The squad announcement had initially been planned for Saturday, but Southgate felt it was fairer to the players to do it sooner. It was why James Maddison had been informed the night before.
Jack Grealish, Harry Maguire and James Maddison cut from England Euro 2024 squad
08:29 , Luke Baker
Jack Grealish and James Maddison have missed the cut for England’s Euro 2024 squad, with the long-serving Harry Maguire failing in his battle to be fit for Germany.
Gareth Southgate named an initial 33-man training squad that needed trimming to 26 players by 11pm on Friday, just over an hour after the final friendly against Iceland finishes.
But rather than wait until Uefa’s deadline, the England boss decided to announce the final cut on the eve of the Wembley send-off.

Gareth Southgate has promised a “different” England, with “different strategies”, after picking one of the boldest and youngest squads in both Euro 2024 and the national team’s history. With 12 players picked for their first ever tournament, the manager took the ruthless decision to cut “devastated” Manchester City playmaker Jack Grealish. Southgate admitted this was one of his most difficult tournament squads to pick, especially as it involved letting down so many stalwarts. Harry Maguire also misses out due to a calf injury, which has only meant further inexperience in defensive positions.
“There’s some disappointment today but there’ll be a lot of excitement about players we’ve selected and to see some of the players who mean we’ve got a different look about us in terms of how we play, and I think people will be captivated by that,” Southgate said, “As I’ve said, I’m trying to conduct myself respectfully because of the players who have gone today. But equally I’m hugely excited about the squad we’ve picked.”
Gareth Southgate explains reasons for Jack Grealish and James Maddison’s England squad omission
Friday 7 June 2024 00:00 , Mike Jones
Gareth Southgate announced his official England squad for Euro 2024 on Thursday evening with the big news being the omissions of Jack Grealish and James Maddison who both picked for the squad at the previous major tournament, World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
The England boss named a 33-player preliminary squad for two warm-up matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland knowing that he would need to cut seven players ahead of the tournament. The squad announcement was due to take place on Saturday morning but as news filtered out of the camp that some big names had been cut the FA decided to bring forward the reveal.
Along with Maddison and Grealish, Harry Maguire will play no part at Euro 2024 with goalkeeper James Trafford, defenders Jarell Quansah and Jarrad Branthwaite and Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones the other players to be omitted.
Southgate explains reasons for dropping Grealish and Maddison from England squad
Here is a detailed dive into who’s on the plane and who will be missing out:
Thursday 6 June 2024 23:45 , Mike Jones
England have selected youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton in a youthful squad for Euro 2024, as Gareth Southgate axed several established names.
The manager left out a raft of high-profile players include James Maddison, Jack Grealish and the injured Harry Maguire from his final 26 players, having already axed Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson and Ben Chilwell from his training squad.
Wharton’s Crystal Palace teammate Eberechi Eze, West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, Aston Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon have all made the final squad. Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez and Ivan Toney also made the cut.

Ivan Toney gets the nod and will bring penalty expertise
Thursday 6 June 2024 23:30 , Mike Jones
The one area of the squad we haven’t yet analysed is the front line. The wingers make some sense, with Southgate going for the form and energy of Bowen and Gordon over the experience of Grealish and Maddison.
The more interesting pick is Ivan Toney, who was perhaps one of the three ‘additional’ players after squads were expanded from 23 to 26 by Uefa in April. That allowed Southgate to take an extra specialist striker in case of injuries.
As well as cover, Toney also provides a useful option off the bench either as a battering ram in the box to score, or as a penalty taker, given his prowess from the spot. Here is a bit of analysis looking at exactly that:

Distraught Maddison says he would have brought ‘something different’
Thursday 6 June 2024 23:15 , Mike Jones
James Maddison has acknowledged he is distraught at being dropped from the England squad ahead of Euro 2024 this summer - and says he believes he offers enough to warrant a place in the 26-man squad.
The Tottenham Hotspur playmaker was among 33 chosen by Gareth Southgate in a large preliminary squad, but was informed he’d be missing out of the eventual group heading to Germany and departed the training camp, despite being in line to start against Iceland in the final pre-tournament warm-up fixture on Friday.
Maddison took to social media to explain he felt he could “bring something different” to the Three Lions group and suggested he had been a “mainstay” throughout qualifying - he appeared in three of England’s eight games and was an unsused sub in three more - but also noted his displays during the second half of 2023/24 were not up to scratch.
‘Devastated’ Harry Maguire reacts after being ruled out of England’s Euro 2024 squad
Thursday 6 June 2024 23:00 , Mike Jones
Harry Maguire has been ruled out of Euro 2024 with a calf injury in a major blow to Gareth Southgate while the England manager has dropped Jack Grealish from his squad for the tournament in Germany.
Southgate had already informed James Maddison and Curtis Jones that they had failed to make the cut as he had to reduce a 33-man training party to a 26-player group to take, while goalkeeper James Trafford and centre-back Jarell Quansah are also expected to be omitted.
But Maguire’s absence will affect Southgate’s plans after the defender was a stalwart in his sides for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and Euro 2020, when he was named in the team of the tournament and when England reached the final.

Harry Maguire: ‘I am absolutely gutted ... go and win it boys’
Thursday 6 June 2024 22:45 , Mike Jones
Harry Maguire has written a post explaining why he will not be going to Euro 2024.
“I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.” Maguire wrote on social media. “Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it.
“Simply, I am absolutely gutted. For me, representing England is the highest honour. It means everything to me. If I can’t help the team as a player, I will support them as a fan – along with the rest of the country. Go and win it boys.
“Next, I will return to the supervision of the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season.”

Thursday 6 June 2024 22:30 , Mike Jones
As for Maguire, the noises were mostly positive coming out of Old Trafford at the end of the season, and the suggestion seemed to be that he would miss England’s warm-up games but might be fit for the group stages.
However, it seems like that won’t be possible, and his absence opens up a huge opportunity for someone in defence alongside John Stones.
The big question is, who?

Iceland to land another Euros blow?
It seems a long time ago that Roy Hodgson’s England traipsed off the pitch in Nice having lost 2-1 to minnows Iceland at Euro 2016.
It proved to be Hodgson’s last hurrah and, following a short stint under Sam Allardyce, Southgate has since changed perception of the England side and taken the nation closer than ever to claiming a second major trophy.
Iceland have not qualified this time around but could have another impact on England if they were to get a positive result at Wembley on Friday night.

Two players who have made the cut for the Euros are Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and Crystal Palace counterpart Adam Wharton.
Mainoo, 19, enjoyed a fine breakthrough season at Old Trafford that peaked with a goal in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.
He also shone on his England bow in March, while Wharton’s reward for an impressed end to the campaign with Palace was a maiden senior call-up and a debut off the bench against Bosnia – the pair will both be hoping to make further strides this time out.

Maddison ‘devastated’ to be left out of Euro 2024 squad: ‘I’ll be back’
Thursday 6 June 2024 20:45 , Mike Jones
James Maddison, who went to the 2022 World Cup but did not make an appearance and has won seven caps in total, admitted he was “devastated” to be left out and felt he could have brought “something different” to the squad.
He wrote on social media: “Devastated doesn’t quite cut it. Trained well and worked hard all week but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set which gave Gareth a decision to make.
“I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26 man squad as I feel I bring something different & had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany but the manager has made the decision and I have to respect that.
“I’ll be back, I have no doubt. Wishing the boys all the luck in the world out in Germany, unbelievable group and lads that I literally call some of my best friends. I genuinely hope football comes home.”
Jarrod Bowen: Playing for England in a tournament would be the pinnacle
Thursday 6 June 2024 20:15 , Mike Jones
The West Ham forward is “trying to impress” when given a chance, and said: “I’m a really family-orientated man – my mum, my dad, my brothers, my sisters, everyone. I had my brother and dad here (at the game). Hereford to Newcastle’s not an hour away, it’s a long old way.
“For me, family is the most important thing and of course it gives you that drive. From where I’ve come from to go to a major tournament would be the pinnacle, but of course there’s a lot that goes into that to get to that stage.
“But for me, when I’m here I’m learning and trying to impress when I get that opportunity.”
He added: “The striking options we have here are elite, you look at Harry (Kane), Ollie (Watkins), Ivan (Toney) and so on. I know my position, I played out on the wing all my career, maybe that’s a good thing because competition with strikers here is probably one of the best.”
Bowen had another important campaign for the Hammers in the Premier League this season, scoring 16 goals in 34 appearances as they finished ninth, and he is determined to keep playing his own game as he aims to secure a ticket to Germany.
“Speaking personally, I’m here on merit for what I’ve done since I’ve been at West Ham,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s about finding that balance where, yes you want to impress, but you also don’t want to do too much, you want to play your own game that got you here in the first place.
“For me it’s staying on that path and staying with that mindset.”
Jarrod Bowen: Playing for England in a tournament would be the pinnacle

Jarrod Bowen admits being involved in a major tournament with England would be “the pinnacle” of his career as he waits to discover if he will be part of Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the European Championship.
Boss Southgate has until midnight on Friday to name his final squad for the tournament in Germany and England’s final preparations got under way with a 3-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina in a warm-up clash at St James’ Park on Monday night.
They have one more friendly against Iceland on Friday before kicking off their Euro 2024 campaign against Serbia on June 16.
Southgate gave a host of players the opportunity to lay claim for a spot in Monday’s clash, including Bowen, who started the game as his father and brother watched on in the crowd.
James Maddison leaves England camp

James Maddison has left the England camp after being cut from the final squad.
Gareth Southgate gave Maddison the news yesterday, saying he was down the pecking order among a raft of attacking midfield options in the squad.
Maddison may have had an inkling when he played only a second-half cameo in Monday’s match against Bosnia.

Southgate on Jarrad Branthwaite: “I think it’s a bit early for Jarrad, he has had a fantastic season and it was good to get him involved and of course in an ideal world you would want a left footer but picking him ahead of the others.
“For him I don’t think that would have been the right call at this stage. And at left back, I think that’s why we have taken a risk with Luke [Shaw], and I think that it’s a risk worth taking.”

Gareth Southgate on who could replace Harry Maguire in the starting XI: “In terms of those coming in there is Lewis Dunk and Marc Guehi. There is also Ezri Konsa who has had an excellent season at Aston Villa.
“He has played him at full-back for some of the recent games but he also played at centre-half for us in March and was outstanding. Joe Gomez can also play in a number of positions.”

Declan Rice on 20-year-old midfielder Adam Wharton: “I think there’s a difference, you can see in players who are top level players at 20 and players that are on the cusp of stuff.
“And he’s top level. He sees a pass early, left and right foot. It’s impressive the way he passes a ball. Whether it’s five or ten yards, there’s just a crispness to it. Really impressive. Calm, composed, relaxed.
“You speak to the Crystal Palace boys about him, he’s shocked them on how well he’s done.
“But he’s 20-years-old, it’s his first tournament. It’s so important we don’t put too much pressure on him. Let him flourish and England are going to have an amazing midfielder to come through for the next 10 to 15 years.”

Declan Rice on losing Maddison and Grealish from the squad: “It’s been really tough. Madders [Maddison] and Jack [Grealish] are two of my best mates in the squad, probably spent most of my time with them since I’ve been here.
“To see them go is not a nice feeling. And they’ve both just said then, before they went, Madders last night, Jack just now, that they wish us all the best.
“They’re gutted they’ve been left out of the squad. We’re so close as a group and no one is feeling really bitter about being left out.”
Gareth Southgate explains reasons for Jack Grealish and James Maddison’s England squad omission
Thursday 6 June 2024 18:45 , Mike Jones

England midfielder Declan Rice speaking about the midfield options: “I think we saw in the last gamp against Brazil and Belgium what Kobbie [Mainoo] can do and obviously all season in what he has done at Manchester United.
“He fully deserves his place in the squad. Adam [Wharton] played the first half of his season in the Championship and to come to Crystal Palace, he has been outstanding.
“In training he has been impressing a lot of the players, he’s so calm on the ball and he has a beautiful left foot.”

Gareth Southgate also addressed whether England can replace Harry Maguire’s leadership saying: “Leadership is a really important part of any successful team, and we have plenty of players on over 50 caps.
“Pickford, Walker, Stones, Rice, Kane, and Trippier is very close to that figure. We will also see characters emerge through the coming months.”

Southgate on Luke Shaw’s fitness: “Shaw has progressed really well in the past couple of weeks and we think he will be able to be involved in the second group game.
“I think you can take one gamble, and that’s one gamble which we have enough evidence on that we can take.”

The England boss also explained why Harry Maguire was omitted: “Part of the reason we couldn’t take Maguire is that he would have been the 10th defender, and that would have meant an unbalance elsewhere.
“We definitely wouldn’t have had him in the group stages ... we need cover and need players fit from the start.
“You know how I feel about Harry, what he’s done for England and what he’s done for me as a manager.”

Southgate also revealed that Jarell Quansah will be part of the squad to face Iceland tomorrow despite not going to the Euros.

Gareth Southgate addresses why James Maddison and Jack Grealish were dropped: “We’ve got some players who have been playing extremely well all season in the league and we feel other players have had stronger seasons, particularly in the last six months or so.
“Attacking areas, in particular, we’re blessed with a lot of options, and some different.
“Madders and Jack offer something different ... we back our decisions but acknowledge we could have gone in another direction.”

Here’s Gareth Southgate sepeaking: “No question, this is one of the most difficult parts of the job. We’re a close team and players, staff have known this decision was coming.
“I tried to do it respectfully and from a most human a side as possible but for the players who aren’t coming with us it is devastating. We’ve got that balance of excitement and remorse on a very difficult day.”
Jack Grealish, Harry Maguire and James Maddison cut from England Euro 2024 squad
Thursday 6 June 2024 17:47 , Mike Jones
Jack Grealish and James Maddison have missed the cut for England’s Euro 2024 squad, with the long-serving Harry Maguire failing in his battle to be fit for Germany.
Gareth Southgate named an initial 33-man training squad that needed trimming to 26 players by 11pm on Friday, just over an hour after the final friendly against Iceland finishes.
But rather than wait until Uefa’s deadline, the England boss decided to announce the final cut on the eve of the Wembley send-off.

Injured Luke Shaw included in the England squad
Thursday 6 June 2024 17:36 , Mike Jones
Manchester United’s Luke Shaw has been included in the England squad for Euro 2024 despite still recovering from injury. His club team mate Harry Maguire, who is also injured, has been cut but Shaw - the only left-footed left-back England have - has been included.
Gareth Southgate previously said Shaw was “up against it” to play at Euro 2024 since the 28-year-old has not played since 18 February.
Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire officially out of England squad

The England squad has been officially revealed with the names of the seven players to miss out on a place at Euro 2024 now known. The big omissions are Jack Grealish, Harry Maguire and James Maddison.
Goalkeeper James Trafford drops out with Jarrad Branthwaite, Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah also omitted.
Finally, James Maddison was told last night that he was being cut and has since left the squad saying he was ‘devastated’ to miss out on the tournament.
Distraught Maddison says he would have brought ‘something different'
Thursday 6 June 2024 17:27 , Jack Rathborn

Thursday 6 June 2024 17:12 , Jack Rathborn

Ivan Toney gets the nod and will bring penalty expertise
Thursday 6 June 2024 17:02 , Lawrence Ostlere

Harry Maguire: ‘I am absolutely gutted ... go and win it boys'
Thursday 6 June 2024 16:56 , Lawrence Ostlere
Who will replace Harry Maguire in England’s defence?
Thursday 6 June 2024 16:27 , Lawrence Ostlere
There are quite a few talking points to that England squad. Let’s start with the defence: if we assume Kyle Walker will play right-back and John Stones will be central defence, with Kieran Trippier playing left-back until Luke Shaw is deemed fit, then who takes the other centre-back role?
Lewis Dunk has had quite a few opportunities under Gareth Southgate recently, but the manager has also made clear how much he likes Marc Guehi, who has been unlucky with a knee injury this year. Does Guehi have enough minutes under his belt to be thrown into a major tournament?
Then there’s Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa – Konsa would appear the more likely of the two, given his stature as an imposing centre-back, but Gomez has several years of experience playing in one of the best teams in the world, and that counts for something on the international stage.
Harry Maguire ruled out of Euros with injury
Thursday 6 June 2024 15:53 , Lawrence Ostlere
As for Maguire, the noises were mostly positive coming out of Old Trafford at the end of the season, and the suggestion seemed to be that he would miss England’s warm-up games but might be fit for the group stages.
However, it seems like that won’t be possible, and his absence opens up a huge opportunity for someone in defence alongside John Stones.
The big question is, who?
Maddison ‘devastated’ to be left out of Euro 2024 squad: ‘I’ll be back'
Thursday 6 June 2024 14:14 , Lawrence Ostlere
Latest: Curtis Jones and James Maddison cut from England squad
Thursday 6 June 2024 13:12 , Lawrence Ostlere
Curtis Jones has followed James Maddison in being cut from Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 training squad and both midfielders have left the England camp.
The uncapped Liverpool player has lost his battle with Adam Wharton to impress Southgate and claim the final midfield berth in his squad after Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson lost their places in his plans. Wharton was given his debut ahead of Jones as a substitute in Monday’s 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina and Southgate praised the Crystal Palace player for his performance, in a sign that he will make his 26-man party for the tournament in Germany.
Maddison was the first player of a 33-man training group who was told he would not be going to Euro 2024. The Tottenham player started the season in fine form but his performances levels had dipped in 2024. Cole Palmer scored as a No 10 on Monday while Southgate has underlined that he sees it as Jude Bellingham’s best position now and with plenty of alternative options – including Phil Foden and Eberechi Eze – he decided there was no room for Maddison.
Cole Palmer takes biggest step yet but England’s fringe players fail to fire
Thursday 6 June 2024 12:14 , Lawrence Ostlere
And here was senior football correspondent Richard Jolly’s verdict from St James’ Park, on a night when fringe players didn’t necessarily grab their chance:
Go back less than a year and Cole Palmer seemed destined for a loan. Instead, he is now heading for Euro 2024, perhaps the breakout star of the club season with a first international goal to his name as well. As Burnley and Brighton, two of the clubs who wanted to borrow him last summer, may reflect, much has changed since then. Chelsea’s player of the season, a man Manchester City may rue selling, has 28 goals, in the shirts of two clubs and now his country.
He has scored in the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, the Community Shield, the European Super Cup and now for England. If the caveat that his maiden strike in his country’s colours was from the penalty spot, plenty of his goals are, but whatever the stage, they seem taken with nonchalant confidence.
A friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina may cement Palmer’s place in Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man squad; not merely for his penalty-taking prowess – though that could prove handy in Germany – but a performance where he had come to look like England’s likeliest source of a goal even before he scored one. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Kane added more as Bosnia and Herzegovina were beaten; the Liverpool vice-captain with a classy volley, the England captain with a predatory finish. An illustration of Alexander-Arnold’s quality may be timely, a reminder of Kane’s ability to pilfer goals needless.

Jarrod Bowen: Playing for England in a tournament would be the pinnacle
Thursday 6 June 2024 11:33 , Lawrence Ostlere

Ivan Toney running out of time to earn Euro 2024 spot
Thursday 6 June 2024 11:09 , Lawrence Ostlere
The England manager explained: “He will be involved in the game on Friday but I have got to get Harry Kane right so sometimes the priorities of what’s required and what you would like to see as well, you can’t achieve all of those objectives. Simple as that.”
Southgate confirmed all his substitutions on Monday were planned, so it was never his intention to use Toney. “Some had had enough minutes, some we want to go again on Friday so we needed to get them off so they weren’t too fatigued,” he said. “There were various things we wanted to see but also changes that were planned.”
Toney scored on his last international appearance, March’s 2-2 draw with Belgium, but finished the season without a goal in his last 12 appearances for Brentford.
While the expansion of the Euro 2026 squads to 26 players gave Southgate the option of taking three specialist strikers, it is possible he will only pick two, augmented by wingers who have also played in the middle, such as Jarrod Bowen, Phil Foden and Anthony Gordon.
England fly to Germany on Monday ahead of tournament’s start

So England have a busy few days ahead. They play Iceland on Friday evening at Wembley, and the squad will be announced on Saturday. On Monday the chosen 26 will fly with the manager and backroom staff to their base near Leipzig in the east of Germany, a remote five-start hotel with a 45-hole golf facility to keep the players entertained.
Euro 2024 begins on Friday 14 June when Germany take on Scotland in Munich. England play Serbia in Gelsenkirchen the following night, before games against fellow Group C opponents Denmark and Slovenia.
