England (4-3-3)

Jordan Pickford (GK) Barely had anything to do. Looked to play shorter passes. Held early header from Sesko. 6

Kyle Walker (RB) Had some weird moments in possession. Did not overlap enough but his defending was acceptable. 6

John Stones (CB) Initial distribution was dodgy. But he was part of England restricting Slovenia to few openings. 7

Marc Guéhi (CB) Blocked Karnicnik’s cross. Booked after mix-up. Mostly smooth but needs to cut out minor errors. 7

Kieran Trippier (LB) Targeted by Slovenia at times. Not his fault he’s on the left. Booked for a clumsy foul. 6

Conor Gallagher (CM) In for Trent Alexander-Arnold, too careless in possession. Hid from the ball. Taken off at half-time. 4

Declan Rice (CM) Inaccurate passing in first half. Offered more stability after the interval. Surged and shot wide. 6

Jude Bellingham (CM) Shuffled left to provide more width. More disciplined but he was ponderous on the ball. 5

Bukayo Saka (RW) Almost got behind Slovenia during the first half. Struggled to find space. Place under threat. 5

Harry Kane (CF) The captain still looks off the pace. Touch was heavy, movement was laboured. Never threatened. 5

Phil Foden (LW) Responsible for England’s livelier moments in first half. Offside when setting up goal for Saka. 6

Substitutes: Kobbie Mainoo (for Gallagher, ht) Made a difference. Wanted the ball. Kept it. 7; Cole Palmer (for Saka, 71) Made creative, intelligent passes. Spurned late chance. 7; Trent Alexander-Arnold (for Trippier, 84) 6; Anthony Gordon (for Foden, 89) 6

Slovenia (4- 4-2)

Jan Oblak (GK) Claimed a couple of tame efforts in the first half. Was not forced into any heroics. 6

Zan Karnicnik (RB) Unable to produce the right cross after reaching byline. Had a few problems with Foden. 7

Vanja Drkusic (CB) Made strong challenges on Kane. Seemed to be in the right place to make interceptions. 7 MOTM

Jaka Bijol (CB) Not afraid to put himself about. Took one for team after being turned by Kane. Booked. 7

Erik Janza (LB) Early booking rules him out of the last-16 tie. But he coped well with Saka. 7

Petar Stojanovic (RW) Headed a deep cross into a dangerous position. Tracked back to deal with Foden. Unselfish. 6

Adam Gnezda Cerin (CM) Pressurised England’s midfielders into mistakes in the first half. Protected the defence as time wore on. 6

Timi Max Elsnik (CM) A tigerish presence who scrapped and knocked England off their stride. Some decent passing. 6

Jan Mlakar (LW) Looked to hit some deep crosses but he was unlikely to trouble Walker. Nullified Saka. 6

Andraz Sporar (CF) Tried to unsettle England’s centre-backs and was keen to shoot. But he was starved of service. 6

Benjamin Sesko (CF) Danger man headed decent chance at Pickford. Carrying a knock and had to go off. 6

Substitutes: Josip Ilicic (for Sesko, 75) 6; Zan Celar (for Sporar, 86) 6; Jon Gorenc Stankovic (for Mlakar, 86) 6; Jure Balkovec (for Janza, 90+1) 6
