The summer transfer window has now closed in Europe after one of the most dramatic deadline days in years despite an otherwise rather quiet window overall. Arsenal left it very late but wrapped up a loan move for Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling, having allowed Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson to leave for London rivals Crystal Palace and Fulham respectively.

Sterling’s former club Chelsea were busy themselves by sealing a loan move for Jadon Sancho from Manchester United, who in turn finally brought Manuel Ugarte to the club after months of talks. Ivan Toney was linked with both Chelsea and Manchester United but ultimately left Brentford for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli.

West Ham were also busy, signing Carlos Soler after allowing James Ward-Prowse to join Nottingham Forest amid a flurry of other deals across the Premier League, including Tottenham securing a potential future move for Johnny Cardoso as Giovani Lo Celso returned to Real Betis and Crystal Palace also signing Trevoh Chalobah and Maxence Lacroix. Chelsea have signed Jadon Sancho on loan from Manchester United, after the clubs reached an agreement late on transfer deadline day and got the move completed with the help of a deal sheet.

It is believed that the deal - wrapped up before the two-hour extension that gave them until 1am BST in the early hours of Saturday morning - includes an obligation to make the move a permanent one next summer for a fee of around £25million if certain criteria are met, which would bring an end to Sancho’s difficult spell at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old arrived at United from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund for £73million in the summer of 2021, but has failed to produce his best form on a consistent basis since then and lost his place in the England squad.

Birmingham have obliterated the League One transfer spending record by signing Jay Stansfield from Fulham.

Stansfield was much loved at Birmingham on loan last season and rejoins them for £15m plus £5m add-ons, with Fulham retaining a 20 per cent sell-on clause and a £100,000 bonus if the Midlands side are promoted to the Championship.

Fulham did not intend to sell Stansfield this summer but felt the final bid on offer was too good to turn down.

West Ham have confirmed the loan signing of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Carlos Soler.

The 27-year-old becomes the ninth signing the Hammers have made this summer in a significant overhaul under new head coach, Julen Lopetegui. James Ward-Prowse, meanwhile, joined Nottingham Forest on loan.

A product of Valencia’s youth academy, Soler joined PSG from his boyhood club in 2022 and has since won two Ligue 1 titles in the French capital, alongside a raft of domestic cup trophies.

Nketiah had looked set for a move to Nottingham Forest but a deal collapsed. Bournemouth and Marseille had registered an interest earlier in the window, though nothing came to fruition.

The 25-year-old made his first-team debut in 2017 and went on to score 38 times in 168 appearances for his boyhood club, winning the FA Cup in 2020 as well as lifting two Community Shields with Arsenal.

The Uruguay international had been one of United’s leading targets all summer and fee with Paris Saint-Germain was finally agreed earlier this week, months after the midfielder was said to have agreed terms with the Red Devils.

Ugarte is believed to have cost the club around £42m with a further £8m to come by way of various add-ons. Reports also suggest PSG have included a 10% sell-on clause into the deal, having come down on their initial valuation of the player.

Brentford have signed Jayden Meghoma from Southampton a four-year deal with an option to extend by a further two, writes Dom Smith.

He was today named in the England U19s squad.

“I’m very pleased with this signing,” said Bees manager Thomas Frank.

“Jayden is an England youth international and one of the biggest left-back talents this country has.

“Again, we had competition from other clubs, so we are definitely doing something right.

“I like Jayden’s offensive ability - he is quick, has good one-on-one skill and can cross – and he has good defensive ability as well. He is adaptable and can play outside or inside full-back.

Crystal Palace have agreed a deal to sign Trevoh Chalobah on a season-long loan from Chelsea, writes Dom Smith.

Chalobah was one of 12 players Chelsea were still planning to move on ahead of deadline day, and he is now having his medical ahead of the 11pm deadline.

There is no option nor obligation to buy on the deal. It is a straight season-long loan, with Palace having paid a fee for his services. He signed a long-term contract extension at Chelsea in November 2022 but has played little football for them in recent seasons due to injuries and falling down the pecking order at centre-back.

If the paperwork and medical are completed in time, Chalobah will help Palace in the centre-back department this season, where new signing Chadi Riad is currently out after suffering a knee injury in Palace’s 4-0 Carabao Cup win over Norwich City on Tuesday.

Tottenham remain locked in talks with Real Betis over a last-ditch deal for Giovani Lo Celso, with both clubs hopeful of an agreement before the 11pm transfer deadline, writes Dan Kilpatrick.

It is understood that Spurs will secure first option on Betis' USA international midfielder Johnny Cardoso as part of the deal, should it go through.

Lo Celso joined Spurs from Betis in a deal worth more than £55million in summer 2019 but he has struggled to consistently perform in the Premier League, and has twice returned to Spain on loan with Villarreal.

He was part of Ange Postecoglou's squad last season, making 22 appearances in the Premier League, but was told he would not be part of the manager's plans for the new campaign.

Spanish media claim the fee for Lo Celso will be around €4million (£3.3m) plus bonuses, with Spurs able to sign Cardoso for more than €30m (£25m) in future, though sources close to Tottenham insist negotiations are ongoing.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola admitted the club have taken a risk by not moving to replace Julian Alvarez in the transfer market but insisted he has more than enough options in attack.

It has been a quiet summer in east Manchester with the return of Ilkay Gundogan and the signing of Savinho the only new signings, while James McAtee has joined the first-team squad after spending the last two seasons on loan at Sheffield United.

After Alvarez left for Atletico Madrid in a deal potentially worth £81million, City were linked with several forwards who might play understudy to Erling Haaland, but chose to stick with what they had in line with Guardiola's preference for working with a small squad.

"I'm happy with the squad," Guardiola said. "We didn't expect Julian was leaving, although he had conversations a long time ago with other clubs and his agent, so it could happen and in the end it happened.

Busy end to window at Craven Cottage

Fulham are locked in talks over a number of players this evening, writes Dom Smith.

There is work being done to try to tie down Ernest Nuamah, who is wanted as Marco Silva targets bringing in a winger as the "final piece" for Fulham in what has been a positive window.

It's getting tight as to whether that gets done, but talks do remain. Nuamah became Fulham's favoured option once his Lyon team-mate Rayan Cherki pulled out of a deal despite an agreement between the two clubs.

Everton also wanted him but are likely to miss out.

Fulham are in talks with Birmingham, who want to sign Jay Stansfield and had a League One-record £10m bid for him rejected earlier today. Birmingham hope to agree a fee but Fulham will not drop their valuation.

And the above could all have implications for Martial Godi, who is with the first-team this season and is wanted by more than one Championship club, including Blackburn, who are in talks to secure him on loan.

That’s according to Sky Italy, with it reported that Al-Ahli have not yet reached an agreement with Napoli over a fee, despite Osimhen giving the green light to a move to Saudi Arabia.

Ange Postecoglou has played down the chances of a transfer deadline day signing at Tottenham, and says he is happy with his squad and feels backed by the club.

Dominic Solanke, a £60million signing from Bournemouth, and teenagers Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Wilson Odobert all arrived at Spurs over the summer, while Timo Werner's loan from RB Leipzig was extended for a further season and the club also agreed a deal for South Korean teenager Yang Min-hyeok, who will join in January.

Asked on Friday lunchtime if Spurs were finished with incomings ahead of the 11pm deadline, Postecoglou said: "Yeah, I think so.

"Unless something surprising jumps out at us in the last 11 hours or whatever it is, that's it for us.

"If nothing else happens - and there's a couple probably will be moving out - I think it's been another positive window for us.

Mikel Arteta has not ruled out Arsenal making a late signing before the transfer window closes tonight.

The Gunners have spent close to £100million this summer by bringing in Mikel Merino and Riccardo Calafiori, while they also made David Raya’s loan move from Brentford permanent for £27m.

Arsenal are not currently close to making further signings, beyond Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto undergoing a medical ahead of a loan move, but Arteta was coy on the club’s transfer plans earlier today.

“This is football,” said Arteta.

“Overall, we have tried to do all the things that we wanted. There was a lot to do. There’s still a few hours to go. We are prepared.

“Let’s see [if Arsenal sign someone]. It’s always possible. In the last hours of the transfer window, never rule anything out.

“I wouldn’t use the word comfortable in the last hours of the window in this league. We’ve done a lot of the things we wanted to do and there’s still a few hours so let’s see.”

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed Marc Guehi will remain at the club this season.

Despite Newcastle making four bids for the England centre-back, Palace held firm. Newcastle’s final bid of £65million was still below the Eagles’ valuation of Guehi, which is more than £70m.

Glasner spoke during a press conference on Friday about Guehi, in which he insisted it was “never really in doubt” that he would stay.

Guehi’s contract at Palace runs until 2026, and the Eagles were reluctant to lose him after selling fellow experienced centre-back Joachim Andersen back to Fulham for around £30m earlier this month.

The Palace manager said: “It was never really in doubt. Congratulations to Crystal Palace, to the chairman [Steve Parish], to the owners — that they didn't give in.

“Especially after the transfer of Joachim Andersen, it was very important that Marc stays.

“Also thank you to Marc. We were always close and talking a lot. All of the rumours didn't influence his performance, his mood, his professionalism.”

Glasner added: “He always told me he is not pushing to leave Crystal Palace and for me that is the most important thing.”

Ibane Bowat, the 21-year-old centre-back, has left Fulham to join Portsmouth permanently, writes Dom Smith.

Bowat has signed a three-year contract with the Championship side, who retain an option to extend it for a further year.

Ange Postecoglou has warned transfer-listed Tottenham pair Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon they will not be part of the first team this season if they do not secure moves away from the club.

Argentina midfielder Lo Celso and Spanish left-back Reguilon are not part of Postecoglou's plans and were "exploring options" on Friday ahead of the 11pm European transfer deadline.

Spurs plan to offer the pair, who both have a year remaining on their contracts, to clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia, where the windows remain open for longer.

Reguilon and Lo Celso are both still training with the first team but Postecoglou says they will not be reintegrated into the playing squad if they stay put.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Saudi side Al-Ahli are closing in on an agreement with player and Napoli.
