Andy Murray out of Wimbledon after shock defeat to Sam Querrey amid injury concerns

SHOCK: Querrey has form for knocking out champions. He did the same thing to Novak Djokovic at last year’s Championships.

Murray was up a set and a break in this quarter-final though and looking good before that niggling hip problem seemed to come back to bite him.

His serve slowed down considerably and his mobility was not up to his usual standard. Querrey, to his credit, took full advantage and is into the last four.

ALL OVER: That’s it, the champion is out.

Querrey won it easily in the end, with another simple service game, but Murray looked in some pain by the end.

Five sets and Querrey wins 3-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1.

Centre Court is in shock.

BROKEN AGAIN: This is tough to watch for Murray fans.

He just isn’t getting across the court like he normally does. It is such a big strength of his but this injury is really hampering him.

Another service game lost. Querry will serve for the match – and we all know he can serve.

SMELLING BLOOD: The American absolutely cruised through his service game, pulling out the big serves when he needed them, and moves 4-1 ahead.

Murray takes a seat for the change of ends and shows no emotion. The photographers are starting to get twitchy at the side of the court as they prepare to capture what could be some historic images in a few minutes.

SPIRIT: Murray finally gets on the board in the final set at 3-1.

If he is going out then he’s going out fighting. He would not want to go out on a bagel and at the very least he has avoided that – but it’s not over yet – can he summon the strength to turn this one around?

UNSTOPPABLE QUERRERY: An incredible upset is brewing here.

Murray’s head, not to mention his hip, looks to have gone. He’s been stunned and is 3-0 down at the start of this final set.

The Scot looks to be on his way out.

HAMMERED: Murray took a real beating in the fourth and he goes down 6-1.

You never know what can happen but based on recent games you expect a real fight in the final set.

We’ll soon find out if his body is giving up on him. It’s 2-2 and Querrey claims the first game in the fifth.

COLLAPSE: Murray has fallen apart in the fourth set.

He’s just lost his serve again to leave the score looking very ugly at 4-1.

His movement doesn’t look great either. He seems to be struggling a bit with his hip and lower back.

QUICK-FIRE: More rapid service games.

As Murray himself pointed out to Yahoo Sport a few weeks ago, grass courts do tend to produce shorter points.

That’s certainly ringing true today. Sadly for him, it’s not going the way he would like at the start of this fourth set and he trails 2-1 and is down a break of serve.

THIRD SET MURRAY: The Brit wins the test of nerves 7-4 with a fine showing and a lack of concentration from his opponent.

There was a MASSIVE mistake from Querrey in there at 2-1 that really was the key moment.

The ball hung in the air for what seemed like hours and the big hitter fluffed his lines with what should have been a simple smash.

Murray never looked back and he wins the third set.

BOTTLE: Murray passes the mental test and was roared on by almost the whole of the Centre Court crowd.

That takes us to 6-6 and we will require a tie break to settle things in the third. More nerves. Another big test – but for both players this time.

TEST FOR MURRAY: Querrey leads 6-5 at the change of ends.

Can Murray hold his nerve now and force a tie break or will this game swing in favour of the American?

STUNNED: Murray has missed his chance to close out the third set without a tie break.

Querry breaks back at a crucial moment to level it at 5-5.

And after my observation about the lack of challenges, we were of course treated to one in that face off.

SLOW DOWN CHAPS! They are speeding through service games here like they have a bus to catch.

Murray now one hold away from clinching this third set.

We’ve only had one challenge in an hour and a half of play on Centre Court. There has been no let-up!

BLITZ: Superb from both players now.

Querrey has just breezed through his latest service game without dropping a point but he still trails 4-3. Murray to serve.

SPEEDY: We’re taking a breather now as the players change ends as the score stands at 3-2 to Murray in this third set.

Querrey needs to find some inspiration here when Murray next takes possession of the ball. These are very short service games and he needs to disrupt the flow if he wants to find a way back in.

For Murray, though, this is perfect.

POWER: Querrey will always have a chance of an easy service game when he can generate this much velocity.

His dad could have been a professional baseball player but instead choose to progress his education – before later telling Sam to do the opposite!

Anyway, he’s on the board in set three but trails 2-1.

THAT’S MORE LIKE IT: Boom! Murray is right back in charge at the start of set three.

SECOND SET QUERREY: Well that wasn’t in the script.

Murray saved one set point but couldn’t stop the American taking his second chance.

A huge backhand was way beyond the reach of the top seed to give the underdog this second set.

SCRATCH THAT: Curse of the commentator and all that… Murray broken in the very next game.

Querrey is back on level terms straight away after a sloppy service game from the Scot.

The American backs it up by winning on his serve and moves within a game from taking the second set at 5-4 – but the Brit has the ball.

PEAK MURRAY: We’d agree with this…

BREAK: It’s Murray who makes the breakthrough in this second set.

He lost three break points there before getting the job done after a tense couple of deuces.

There was a touch of class from the Scot with a fine lob and then a great passing shot to win the game. He leads 4-3 here.

BATTLE: We’ve got a match on our hands now.

The first set was a one-sided affair but it looks a different prospect in the second.

Both players trading blows from the baseline. The points are short but the action is thrilling. We’re level at 3-3 with the man from across the pond serving next.

MEANWHILE: As Murray breezes through another service game to level up at 2-2, here’s a look at what’s happening on Court One.

TOO HOT TO HANDLE: The noise generated by the American’s serve is really quite something.

A 131mph arrow nearly takes out Murray and he can do nothing in the way of returning it. It”s a huge weapon for Querrey and he seems to have found his groove to re-take the lead at 2-1 in the second set.

QUERREY RESPONDS: First game, second set, Querrey storms back.

Another quick service game gets him back on the board. The pressure is right back on him though as Murray delivers a similarly effective attack.

FIRST BLOOD MURRAY: He is expected to win today and he’s not disappointing so far.

That’s the first set in the bag for the world No. 1 after he holds serve to take the opener 6-2 in just under half an hour.

There was one very long rally in that game that really showed the quality of both players.

PRESSURE? WHAT PRESSURE? Querrey was serving to stay in the set there but he did so with ease.

A love service game and Murray will have to serve it out himself. Here we go.

MIXING IT UP: Murray is keeping Querrey guessing.

A volley, some strong baseline hitting, this variation is what makes him one of the best players in the world right now.

He’s not a one dimensional player like so many on the tour, including his American opponent today. 5-2 Murray.

BIG SERVE: There’s that big serve.

Querrey smashes a 130mph bullet to win his service game and give the Scotsman something to think about at 4-2.

BREATHING SPACE: Murray holds, albeit with a couple of minor errors, and he takes a 4-1 lead before taking a well-earned breather.

No early nerves from the champion.

MURRAY ON THE CHARGE: The World No.1 consolidated that break to take a stranglehold on this first set.

An impressive start from the favourite but Querrey then manages to hold to give himself half a chance at 3-1 with Murray now to serve again.

BREAK: Wow, what a start from Murray.

That big serve threat didn’t come to much. Querrey is broken at the first attempt!

PLAY: Murray gets us underway here in this quarter-final clash as he elects to serve first.

It’s a good start from the Brit too. Simple. Calm. Exactly what he would have wanted.

Now let’s take a look at this big Querrey serve.

WARMING UP: Both players are on court now going through their warm ups.

We are expecting play to get underway at about three minutes on Centre Court.

The roof is open and the sun is shining… for now!

THE OPPOSITION: Here’s a bit of background info on Sam Querrey, the man standing in Murray’s way on his road to the semis.

The American is a big server and at the age of 29 he is in the peak years of his career.

He has racked up an incredible 99 aces so far this tournament – the second most at SW19 this year – making him difficult to break.

Querrey is ranked 28th in the world and is the 24th seed for Wimbledon after knocking out Novak Djokovic, who was the defending champion at the time, in 2016.

MURRAY FITNESS UPDATE: There had been concerns over the Brit prior to the tournament as he struggled with a hip problem, however the man himself is feeling ready to go all the way.

“Like I said at the beginning of the tournament, I’ll be able to get through seven matches if that’s what I have to do,” he said after his win over Benoit Paire on Monday.

“Obviously I want to try to get to the final. I’ve done a good job so far here.”

TIPPED BY A GREAT: Andre Agassi, who is coaching Djokovic this year, believes Murray has a big advantage by playing on home soil.
