What we know about Wonka 2

The 2023 film was a box office sensation

On paper, Willy Wonka's origin story wasn't expected to work but it did when Paul King delivered a whimsical musical starring Timothée Chalamet.

The movie saw the chocolate connoisseur face the Chocolate Cartel after he arrives at the Galéries Gourmet with a dream of opening his own shop. While Arthur Slugworth (Paterson Joseph), Gerald Prodnose (Matt Lucas), and Felix Fickelgruber (Mathew Baynton) did all they could to get rid of him there was no stopping genius, especially when he has the help of Oompa Loompa friend Lofty (Hugh Grant).

Wonka became a huge box office success, earning over $600m worldwide, so it is only to be expected that there be a sequel. Here is everything that we know about Wonka 2.

Per the Film and Television Alliance, Wonka 2 is reportedly in pre-production with filming expected to start on 5 January 2026. Paul King is listed as director, and is said to be co-writing the script alongside Simon Farnaby, who he worked on the first film with, and Simon Stephenson.

A sequel hasn't officially been announced, however King shared a promising update with ComicBook.com back in February, saying: "It's definitely something we're thinking about. One of the things I love most about David Heyman, my producer, is that he has made so many great movies that he doesn't feel the pressure to just make a movie because it can be made.

"He has this great saying which reassures me enormously where he goes, 'We'll have a think, see what we can come up with, and then see if we want to make it,' and it's incredibly liberating, rather than somebody going, 'You are making a film that's coming out in September,' and you're like, 'I don't even have an idea.'"

He added: "Of course there are some ideas sloshing around, but we don’t have a story yet, so we’ll see what happens."

It is not yet known what a Wonka sequel is about, but the Film and Television Alliance write that the film will continue the reimagining of the character's origin story. It is said to be set in mid-19th century England during the Industrial Revolution, and that Willy is a man who sees "colour within the grey of a dreary England".

The first Wonka film ended with the titular character building his famed chocolate factory and bringing in Lofty as his full-time employee. So the movie could also show how Willy's first venture as a chocolate factory owner went, and what made him the jaded inventor that we know from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Wonka had a star-studded cast including Olivia Colman, it is unclear who could return for a sequel but it is expected that Timothée Chalamet will. (Warner Bros.)

Any Wonka sequel would be missing something big if Chalamet doesn't return, the actor breathed new life into his character with his charming and light-hearted take on him. Similarly, Grant should also hopefully return as Lofty and Calah Lane as Wonka's good friend Noodle.

It is unclear whether any of the other cast members from the first film would return, but it is almost certain that the film will have an A-list cast whether actors like Olivia Colman or Tom Davis return, or new ones come in.
