Renee Zellweger feels 'like a kid' at 50

To many she will forever be the 30-something singleton from the Bridget Jones movies. But Renée Zellweger has revealed that it is ageing – in particular turning 50 in April – that has finally made her feel young again.

“At 21,” she explained in an interview in this month’s Vogue, “you have an attractiveness that’s... obvious. You only really come into your own a bit further along in your life.” Adding that since April, she’s felt “like a kid.”

“It’s a clean slate. You get to a point where you recognise what you value and live by it with a greater degree of ease. You forget about the societal pressures that you never even realised were influencing your decision making.”

Before going on to say, “Good luck to every girl until you get to 50! I’ll be thinking about you, but just wait – what fun. Oh my goodness.”

So what has prompted the usually very private movie star to open up? Her new Netflix series What/If, which debuts on the streaming service this weekend.

The melodrama, which has sprung from the mind of Revenge creator Mike Kelley, is Zellweger’s first foray into the world of TV and one which she is very excited about.

Kelley has admitted styling the Texan’s character, Anne Montgomery, on The Graduate’s Mrs Robinson, but “instead of channelling her self-loathing into alcoholism and the boy down the street, she had decided to build an empire”.

“As soon as I heard that, I just said, ‘Take me to wardrobe,’” Zellweger explained. Adding, “Isn’t she fun? So fun. Oh my gosh,” Zellweger says. “I would never, but she would, and she does.”

But What/If isn’t the only Zellweger has in the works. She will be next seen in cinemas in Judy, playing the iconic Miss Garland.
