'Mission: Impossible – Fallout' opens to franchise best box office
Mission: Impossible – Fallout debuted at the weekend to a franchise best, hauling in $153 million worldwide – around £136 million.
The $61.5 million earned in the US alone has the made the movie the second largest opening of Tom Cruise’s career (just behind 2005’s War of the Worlds).
Prior to Fallout’s sterling bow, Mission: Impossible II was the debut to beat, having made $57.8 million on its opening weekend in 2000.
To add a little more context, the previous M:I instalment, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Notion, made $55 million on its opening weekend in 2015.
Stunningly good reviews and a pretty clear run with no other significant openings will have assisted Fallout’s solid performance.
It’s currently sitting pretty with a 98% ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Rogue Nation went on to make $682.7 million worldwide, but it’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol which holds the top spot in the franchise.
It made $694.7 million in 2011, adding to the near $3 billion the five movies so far have made at the box office cumulatively.
However, unlike Disney’s Marvel movies, a Mission: Impossible film is yet to break the $1 billion on its own, though perhaps Fallout could be its best opportunity yet.
Starring Cruise alongside Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Henry Cavill and Angela Basset, it finds Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and his team pursuing a consignment of stolen plutonium.
It’s out now across the UK.
