First look at Renée Zellweger as Judy Garland in new biopic ‘Judy’
Big news for fans of classic Hollywood musicals, the first teaser trailer for Renée Zellweger’s Judy Garland biopic Judy has landed online. You can watch it below, and you can probably guess what the main song’s going to be.
Yep, Renée Zellweger’s will be going ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ for the biopic, which is scheduled for release on 4 October, and will have a ‘Best Song’ Oscar nomination presumably sewn-up.
In fact, the whole film looks like typical Oscar bait, though we’ll reserve judgement on how inevitable Renée Zellweger’s ‘Best Actress’ award will be, until we’ve actually heard her speak.

That’s because, surprisingly, we don’t get any dialogue from Zellweger’s Judy, and we’re not sure why. Maybe they wanted to go for the impact of the reveal that it’s actually Zellweger singing the trailer’s song, which does sound extraordinarily like the original piece.
Still, we’d have liked at least a little bit of dialogue – maybe that’ll come in the first full trailer.
The film’s set in 1968, with the iconic singer/actress arriving in London for her sell-out run at The Talk of the Town, three decades after The Wizard of Oz.
There’ll be plenty of drama, glimpsed in this teaser, as Garland battles with her management, and begins a romance with Mickey Deans, her eventual fifth husband.

According to Zellwegger, the film takes place, “in a time when women didn’t necessarily feel that they had power over their own lives.”
That power dynamic, “stayed with me, and I hope folks will be moved by that as well.”
We’ll find out, when the film is released on 4 October.
