A new drama series by Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk director Barry Jenkins is the standout new offering on Amazon Prime Video this month. The Underground Railroad is set to be one of the most talked about shows of the year — a passion project for one of the world's most acclaimed directors.
Elsewhere, the film offering on Amazon this month is geared around documentaries, with two focusing on the world of music while another examines one of the most famous figures in modern English football. There's also an enjoyable array of both recent and classic films, led by the surprisingly entertaining Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
Here's everything coming to Amazon Prime Video this month...
New films coming to Amazon Prime Video in May
The Boy from Medellín (7 May)
Colombian reggaeton singer J Balvin is the subject of this documentary from Matthew Heineman, who returns to the world of non-fiction after helming the Marie Colvin biopic A Private War, starring Rosamund Pike. The film is an intimate portrait of Balvin in the week leading up to a concert in his hometown of Medellín, amid mounting political unrest.
P!NK: All I Know So Far (21 May)
Seemingly a more conventional concert documentary, All I Know So Far follows P!NK on her 2019 Beautiful Trauma world tour and sees her juggling the various facets of her life, including motherhood. The tour took in 156 shows in 18 countries, showcasing P!NK's status as one of the most bankable and successful female performers on the planet.
Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In (29 May, following 27 May cinema release)
Sir Alex Ferguson is synonymous with one of the most dominant runs of any club in the history of English football. He took the helm as manager of Manchester United in 1986 and won 13 Premier League titles and a pair of Champions League crowns over the course of almost 30 years in charge. This film is directed by his son, Jason Ferguson, and sees the man himself recount his life in the aftermath of the brain haemorrhage he suffered in 2018.
New TV coming to Amazon Prime Video in May
The Underground Railroad (14 May, all episodes)
Barry Jenkins is one of the most exciting and poetic filmmakers working in Hollywood today. Before hopping over to Disney to helm the sequel to the CGI version of The Lion King, he has taken charge of this 10-part alternative history series.
Based on the novel by Colson Whitehead, the show depicts the titular network of abolitionists, escaped slaves and safe houses as a literal railway. The book won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, so Jenkins has a high watermark to reach with his TV adaptation.
Solos (21 May, all episodes)
With an incredible cast of A-listers in front of the camera — and some other big names behind it — this seven-part anthology series is debuting in its entirety this month. The marketing blurb teases stories exploring the present and future of humanity and the ways in which we're all connected.
The actual films themselves are being kept relatively under wraps, but we do know that the cast includes the likes of Anne Hathaway, Morgan Freeman, Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens, Helen Mirren and Constance Wu.
Panic (28 May, all episodes)
High-concept young adult tales are still being churned out with real regularity, even though the box office highs of The Hunger Games are a distant memory. Amazon's new ten-part series Panic has an intriguing idea at its heart, pitting high school seniors against each other in a series of dangerous games, which they believe present their only chance to escape their small town and find better opportunities elsewhere. Lauren Oliver is in the writer's chair, adapting her own book, as well as exec producing.
