Xavier basketball adds to 2023-24 roster again with Slovenian center Sasa Ciani

Xavier head basketball coach Sean Miller has nine new Musketeers this season.

Xavier University basketball's new-look roster is adding another piece to the front court.

Xavier has landed another international talent, acquiring 20-year-old Sasa Ciani from Slovenia, in a move that was first reported by Rick Broering of Musketeer Report and confirmed by Xavier on Tuesday.

Ciani, a 6-foot-9 center, averaged 11.1 points and 6.9 rebounds in 22.1 minutes over 27 games last season for KK Cedevita Junior. He shot 65.9% from the field to help lead his team to a 20-7 record. Ciani averaged 12.3 points and 8.6 rebounds in the Fiba U20 European Championship in July, including a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double against Spain.

"What he (Ciani) does with his size, however, might be even more impressive, he's an efficient interior scorer who can finish pick-and-roll plays, as well as creating his own shot with his back to the basket. Ciani has also shown enough shooting touch to step out and convert jumpers from beyond the arc," Fiba said about the Musketeers center in a scouting report for the Fiba U20 European Championship.

With Jerome Hunter and Zach Freemantle still out with injuries, Xavier has now added a trio of international players over the last few months. It started with Gytis Nemeiksa in July, who made his Xavier debut in the Baha Mar Hoops Summer League in August, grabbing 10 rebounds and scoring seven points in a win over Bahamas Raw Talent Elite. Xavier then added Serbian forward Lazar Djokovic, who began practicing with the team in August. Xavier begins its fall practices later this month.
