Wolves, buffalo and how they relate to new Alabama baseball coach Rob Vaughn's philosophy
Over the course of introductory interviews Tuesday, new Alabama baseball coach Rob Vaughn expressed gratitude, talked baseball and explained how to take down a buffalo.
Yes, really. Vaughn explained it from the perspective of a pack of wolves.
"You have the buffalo walking around, one (wolf) grabs one leg, one grabs the other," Vaughn said. "One jumps on his back and the final one jumps on his throat and takes him down."
So how in the heck does that relate to baseball?
"That's how we have to compete on Friday nights," Vaughn said. "Especially in this league. If you’re going to try to go one-on-one with that buffalo, he’s going to kick you in the mouth a lot. It’s going to be about our group as a unit saying together we’re going to take him down."
Vaughn was explaining his hitting philosophy called "The Pack" on the day Alabama athletics introduced Vaughn as its 33rd baseball coach in program history at a press conference.
Vaughn takes over a Crimson Tide team fresh off a trip to the NCAA Tournament's Winston-Salem Super Regional where it fell to No. 1 Wake Forest. Alabama (43-21) held its first NCAA regional in Tuscaloosa since 2006 the weekend prior. Jason Jackson had been the interim coach who led Alabama to a 13-6 finish after former coach Brad Bohannon was fired in early May after he was found to have been on the phone with a man in Cincinnati who placed large wagers on Alabama to lose to LSU on April 28. Jackson will remain on staff after receiving a promotion to associate head coach.
Vaughn adopted "The Pack" philosophy after picking it up from a line of coaches. First, Matt Deggs debuted the philosophy at Texas A&M almost two decades ago. He worked with Andy Sawyers, who became the hitting coach at Kansas State when Vaughn was a senior.
"Essentially, it’s every wolf in the pack has its job," Vaughn said.

Vaughn added that it's key for the staff to find out what each player does well and how the staff can help them grow. He stressed the need for different pieces of the puzzle.
"I’m telling you, if you’re going to go beat a guy like (LSU pitcher) Paul Skenes on a Friday night, you’ve got to have different ways to beat him other than line up and go hit, hit, hit," Vaughn said.
Some examples Vaughn included were being hit by a pitch, a stolen base or a hustle double.
Vaughn, who has been at Maryland for the past 11 years, said "The Pack" mentality has been crucial in offensive success, allowing the Terrapins to "slay some giants" because they worked together.
"It’s how wolves hunt," Vaughn said. "I tell them lone wolves don’t survive. A lone wolf in the wild, it sounds cool, but they don’t survive. They hunt in packs and they do it for a reason."
