Wisconsin bar offers free beer until Packers score, really regrets it during shutout
Wisconsinites love their Green Bay Packers more than anything else, but they love their beer too. So at least something good came out of last Sunday’s Packers game at one Wisconsin bar.
According to “As It Happens” on CBC Radio, the Bavarian Bierhaus in Glendale, Wisconsin, has a fun promotion: Free beer during Packers games until they score. With Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, that’s not a big problem for the bar. With Brett Hundley replacing an injured Rodgers quarterback? That’s a lot of free beer, especially last Sunday.
The Packers were shut out 23-0 by the Baltimore Ravens last week, the first time Green Bay has been shut out since 2006. That meant the tap was on for more than three hours, for an estimated 275-300 free cups of beer according to “As It Happens.”
“I have to tell you, Carol, that so many people, when they came back after the half time and in the third quarter, actually apologized for drinking my beer, hoping the Packers would score,” Scott Bell, the bar’s general manager, told show host Carol Off.
Bell said they looked at the statistics before offering the promotion, and usually the Packers score on the first or second drive with Rodgers. Even with a backup quarterback you don’t expect an NFL team to get shut out. Bell said, “in reality, you know, it was kind of a shocker.” However, Bell also said it was a fun afternoon. It presumably was quite fun for the fans who knocked down free beers for three hours.
Rodgers is out with a broken collarbone, and unless the 5-5 Packers win some more games to stay in the playoff race, Rodgers is unlikely to return this season. That means six more games with Hundley or whoever else the Packers might try at quarterback, though it sounds like the bar is continuing the promotion.
“We’re going to have a whole lot of beer available, just in case the same thing repeats itself,” Bell said.
