William Contreras, with another award, stakes his claim to the title of best catcher in MLB
William Contreras is in some pretty good company.
Heading into Tuesday, five players in Milwaukee Brewers history had won a Silver Slugger award in consecutive seasons: Cecil Cooper, Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, Ryan Braun and Christian Yelich.
You can now make it six.
Contreras was named the National League Silver Slugger at catcher, giving him the honor each of his first two seasons with the Brewers.
After a breaking out with an .831 OPS and 17 home runs in his first year with Milwaukee following a three-team trade involving Atlanta and Oakland, Contreras built on that production in 2024.
Playing nearly every day, Contreras hit .281 with a .365 on-base percentage and .831 OPS. He hit 23 home runs, scored 99 runs, drove in 92 – all career-highs for the 26 year old backstop.
He led all National League catchers in homers, runs, RBI, average and OPS to cruise to the award.
In winning another Silver Slugger, Contreras further stakes a claim to the title of best catcher in baseball. Since 2022, the two-time all-star leads all MLB catchers (minimum 500 plate appearances) in average, OPS, runs and, perhaps most importantly, Wins Above Replacement. He's also second to only Will Smith in RBI and homers.
The Brewers had two other finalists – shortstop Willy Adames and outfielder Jackson Chourio – but neither won. Had Chourio been one of the NL's three outfielders to be honored, he would have become the youngest player in MLB history to be a Silver Slugger.
