Will Seahawks join anthem protest? 'Our locker room has discussed it'
Seattle Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin became a star last season, got a nice contract extension, and is thinking about entering the consciousness of many people who only have a passing interest in the NFL.
Baldwin said he is considering joining Colin Kaepernick and taking a knee during the national anthem, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.
“I want to make sure that I get all of my ducks in a row before I do so,” Baldwin said, via Condotta.
Not only is Baldwin considering a protest during the anthem, it sounds like others on the Seahawks might be as well.
“Our locker room has discussed it so we’ll see,” Baldwin said, according to Condotta.
Baldwin’s teammate, cornerback Jeremy Lane, sat down during the national anthem in Seattle’s final preseason game and said he’ll continue to do so. Kaepernick was also joined in his protest by 49ers safety Eric Reid. Kaepernick’s protest has drawn a ton of attention, both positive and negative.
Condotta reported that Baldwin has spoken with Kaepernick over the last couple weeks. Kaepernick is friends with Ricardo Lockette, who had to retire this offseason after playing with the Seahawks and 49ers. Lockette’s relationship with Kaepernick is how Baldwin got in touch with him.
In one respect it’s a very interesting dynamic. The Seahawks and 49ers have been bitter rivals the past few years. But the point Kaepernick is trying to make, bringing attention to racial injustice, goes beyond a football rivalry.

The Seahawks have been outspoken for years. The coaching staff allows players to be themselves, and that might be a reason the team is so tight. Cornerback Richard Sherman has spoken out about the Black Lives Matter movement, though he said Kaepernick could have “picked a better platform” for his protest. Coach Pete Carroll was asked about Lane’s protest and whether he’ll continue it, and Carroll just said it’s Lane’s choice.
Even though only two players joined Kaepernick’s protest in the fourth week of the preseason, it sounds like others may join him starting this week. Keep an eye on Seattle before the Seahawks kick off against the Miami Dolphins.
