Why was Tyreek Hill detained? Dolphins WR handcuffed before Miami season opener

Hours before Sunday's slate of Week 1 games began, images of Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill in handcuffs outside of Hard Rock Stadium circulated on social media.

Police officers temporarily detained Hill, 30, for a "traffic incident" near the stadium, though they released him shortly after, according to a statement from the team. ESPN's Jeff Darlington posted on social media site X (formerly Twitter) that the receiver was cited for reckless driving, and a verbal altercation with police during the traffic stop led to the use of handcuffs.

The Dolphins say Hill will still be active for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.

Did Tyreek Hill get arrested?

It's important to note the distinction between the words "arrest" and "detain" here.

"Arrested" means a person is formally taken into custody and charged with a crime. "Detained" means a person is stopped by law enforcement for a brief period of time. After police evaluate the situation, they may eventually release a detainee.

Hill was not arrested by police and taken into custody. But he was detained.

Why was Tyreek Hill detained?

According to multiple reports, including a statement from the Dolphins, police detained Hill for a traffic incident outside of Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Darlington reported he was cited for reckless driving, and that a verbal altercation with the police during the traffic stop led to his handcuffing.

Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN that Hill was ticketed for a "moving violation entering the stadium" initially.

"How things escalated into the situation that they were in — in handcuffs and being on the ground with police — is mind-boggling to me," Rosenhaus said. "We will be looking into it."

Is Tyreek Hill playing today?

According to Rosenhaus, Hill's agent, and the Dolphins, Hill will play in the team's Week 1 game against the Jaguars.

The 30-year-old receiver is entering his third season with Miami after the Dolphins acquired him in a March 2022 trade with the Chiefs.
