Why Tennessee Titans graded 18th in NFLPA team report cards, and what category got an F

The Tennessee Titans' standing among NFL teams hasn't changed in the past year.

The Titans graded as the NFL's 18th-best team to play for in the NFLPA's annual survey released Wednesday, the same position they finished in last year's survey. The Titans' best grade in any of the 11 categories that players were polled was a B-plus, and the worst grade was an F for team travel, the second year in a row.

The NFLPA's overview of the Titans' grade says the team doesn't excel in any area and is league-average in most. The two most commonly raised issues from Titans players pertain to travel and the franchise's decision to install artificial turf at Nissan Stadium in 2023 instead of natural grass.

The Miami Dolphins were graded the NFL's No. 1 team. The Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs were No. 31, with the Washington Commanders last at No. 32.

More about the Titans' most interesting grades

The survey raises two main issues about the Titans' travel accommodations: First, they are one of just seven NFL teams that require certain players to have roommates the night before games. Second, according to NFLPA president JC Tretter, the Titans' coaches took the first-class seating on team planes; 63% of Titans players who responded to the survey said they don't have enough leg room on flights.

The low grade in family treatment is a product of the Titans not providing a family room on game days. Twenty teams do provide family rooms.

The B-plus grades for head coach and ownership come with specific caveats. Neither is based on how likable a coach/owner is or team success. The ownership grade is based purely on how much money players believe the owner is willing to spend to improve facilities, and the coaching grade relates to how respectful, dutiful and professional the coach is with the players.

Comparing to last year

This survey polled 1,706 players between Aug. 28 and Nov. 14, 2023. Players submitted responses anonymously.

The Titans ranked as the league's 18th-best team to play for in the NFLPA's survey for 2022, earning A-minus grades for training staff and strength coaches; a B for weight room; B-minus grades for family treatment, food service and training room; a C for locker room quality; and an F for team travel. The Titans' grade for team travel ranked as low as it did because of the team's roommate arrangements and lack of first-class seating on flights.

These grades reflect the Titans in their final year under former coach Mike Vrabel. The team hired Brian Callahan in January to replace Vrabel, overhauling its coaching and support staffs in the process. One of the few roles Callahan has yet to fill is the Titans' strength and conditioning coach.
