Why Teen Wolf fan was rooting for ACA Patriots in AHSAA basketball Final Four

BIRMINGHAM − There was a werewolf sighting at Legacy Arena during American Christian Academy's Class 4A boys basketball state title game on Friday at the AHSAA Final Four.

More appropriately, there was a Teen Wolf sighting, with ACA board of directors member Craig Williams dressing up as the iconic character from the 1985 movie. The film featuring Michael J. Fox was about a high school basketball player who became a werewolf. The movie spawned a sequel, an animated television series and later a live-action TV series.

Williams also wore a set of Halloween fangs, but made one slight change to complete the outfit: Instead of a yellow uniform for the Beavers, Williams borrowed a big Patriots basketball uniform for the team to complete the costume.

Williams already had the costume. The Tuscaloosa engineer who lives in Northport was originally going to dress up for a major rivalry game as a part-time mascot for the school, but it never came to fruition. Once the Patriots secured their place in the final, Williams started to plan this costume.

"You'd have to watch the movie, it would make sense," Williams told the Tuscaloosa News on why he was in the costume. "... Just having fun."

There was two minor problem. Most of the students didn't understand the reference to the old movie. His children didn't seem to think the idea was as cool as he did.

"It hurt my heart," Williams said. "I got some boys here, and I embarrassed them on the way in. I got three boys here, and nobody wanted to walk in with me."
