Why Philadelphia 76ers fans thanked OKC Thunder's Mike Muscala following retirement

After confirming his retirement to The Oklahoman on Saturday, Mike Muscala received plenty of praise from fanbases of his previous teams.

Atop the list was OKC, which the 11-year pro played for parts of five seasons and returned to around this past season's trade deadline. But Muscala also received an outpouring of gratitude from Philadelphia fans, who consider him to be a legend in the franchise's history.

Muscala only appeared in 47 games with the 76ers during the 2018-19 season, but he played a large role in the team's current-day success by helping it land Kentucky guard Tyrese Maxey in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Muscala was playing for OKC when it rallied for a 116-115 win over Miami in the second-to-last game of the 2019-20 regular season. The 6-foot-10 center scored all six of his points off a pair of late 3-pointers, including a go-ahead one with 5.2 seconds remaining.

The game had massive draft implications for OKC, which owed its 2020 first-round pick to Philadelphia. The pick came with a top-20 protection, and it ended up being the No. 21 pick because of the Thunder's win over the Heat.

Philadelphia acquired the pick as a result, and it selected Maxey. The 6-2 guard has since flourished with the 76ers, earning an All-Star appearance and the NBA's Most Improved Player award last season at the age of 23.

Philadelphia signed Maxey to a five-year, $204 million contract extension on July 1. It's a well-deserved deal for one of the most promising young players in the league, and Maxey has Muscala to thank for landing with the 76ers.

“I hear it so often,” Maxey said following Philadelphia's 137-126 win over Indiana on Nov. 12, 2023. “Bub (team security) reminds me at least twice a month. I’ve seen it, and it’s great. That’s cool. I mean, that’s just ironic, I guess. Shoutout to Mike. I like being here.”
