Why was Mike Vrabel fired? What to know about Tennessee Titans coaching change news

There will be a new Tennessee Titans coach in 2024.

The Titans fired Mike Vrabel on Tuesday, the team announced.

Vrabel completed his sixth season as Titans coach with Sunday's win over the Jaguars that denied Jacksonville an AFC South title. Despite that win and the upset win over Miami last month, the Titans finished 6-11 and is 6-18 over the last 24 games with two missed postseasons.

In the last 13 months, the Titans GM and coach from a stretch of three straight playoff berths and two AFC South titles have exited Nashville. Jon Robinson and Vrabel helped create the roster and culture that produced the most successful stretch since Amy Adams Strunk has been controlling owner of the team. Both are now gone.

Vrabel leaves Nashville with three playoff appearances in six seasons, with one AFC title game berth and two AFC South titles. He had a 54-45 career record in the regulars season.

HOT BOARD: 14 Tennessee Titans coaching candidates after Mike Vrabel fired, from Jim Harbaugh to Jim Schwartz

Why was Mike Vrabel fired as Titans coach?

A source close to the situation told the Tennessean on Tuesday that Vrabel's philosophy regarding collaboration between the coaching staff and the front office didn't align with what the team wanted to do going forward. Vrabel's philosophy more closely aligned with one person having the bulk of the decision-making power, similar to how the Titans functioned with Robinson as GM. With current GM Ran Carthon, that process is evolving.

What Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk said about Mike Vrabel's firing

Strunk released a statement on Tuesday about Vrabel's firing, alluding to the different process of collaborating by the team moving forward.

"As the NFL continues to innovate and evolve, I believe the teams best positioned for sustained success will be those who empower an aligned and collaborative team across all football functions," Strunk said in the statement. "Last year, we began a shift in our approach to football leadership and made several changes to our personnel to advance that plan. As I continued to assess the state of our team, I arrived at the conclusion that the team would also benefit from the fresh approach and perspective of a new coaching staff."

"I will never shy away from acknowledging that I have unapologetically high expectations for the football team and every aspect of the Titans organization. Our vision is not simply to produce more wins than losses, it is to regularly compete for championships. While this season was disappointing, I see early signs of progress taking shape."

Mike Vrabel's record as Titans coach

Vrabel was named Titans head coach in 2018 following the ouster of Mike Mularkey following a 2017 season in which the Titans won a playoff game. Tennessee went 9-7 in 2018 but missed the playoffs as Marcus Mariota battled injuries in the final month of the season.

Derrick Henry emerged in December 2018 as a lead back, and that carried over into 2019. Still, the Titans started slowly in 2019, leading to Mariota's benching for Ryan Tannehill in October 2019. Tannehill and Henry led Tennessee to a 9-7 record and a wild card berth in 2019, then to wins over Tom Brady's New England Patriots (in Brady's final game as a Patriot) and Lamar Jackson's Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.

Tennessee's offense again carried the team in 2020, with the Titans going 11-5 and winning the AFC South for the first time in 12 years. The Titans did it again in 2021 with a more balanced roster, going 12-5 and earning the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

But two one-and-done postseasons sapped momentum, including the 2021 AFC Divisional Playoff loss to Cincinnati. Tannehill threw three interceptions in the loss, while Henry returned from a foot injury and wasn't as effective as usual.

Things never really were the same after the playoff loss to the Bengals in hindsight. The Titans traded away young star receiver A.J. Brown to the Eagles during that April's draft, sapping youth and ability from an aging offense instead of giving Brown an extension. A 7-3 start in 2022 was flipped over into a seven-game losing streak to the end of the year, the in-season firing of Robinson and a missed postseason.

New GM Ran Carthon was hired in January 2023, and he made a major move in the draft that April by moving up in the second round to select QB Will Levis. But efforts to improve the roster, especially on the offensive line, were ineffective in 2023. Tannehill was injured in October as the Titans slumped to a 2-4 start, and Levis' play as Tannehill's replacement was hamstrung by an offensive line that allowed 64 sacks overall. Despite upset wins over Miami and Jacksonville in the final month of the season that directly impacted the AFC playoff picture, Tennessee finished last in the AFC South at 6-11 with a lot of work to do in the offseason.

Titans coaching search: Who should Tennessee target as next coach?

If the Titans want to go along with another recent trend in the NFL, there are several candidates with offensive backgrounds in line for an opportunity as a first-time head coach in 2024. Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith and Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan all will get interviews this winter among other names. In particular, Slowik was an assistant in San Francisco from 2017-22 while Carthon was a front office executive with the 49ers.

There are also experienced coaches looking for a second chance, like Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores and 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks. Morris and Flores were previously head coaches elsewhere, and Wilks was the Panthers interim coach in 12 games last season.

Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz was a senior assistant on Vrabel's staff in 2021 and 2022 before leading Cleveland's top-ranked defense this season. Schwartz also was the Titans defensive coordinator from 2001-08 under Jeff Fisher before a three-year stint as the Lions head coach.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is reportedly interested in returning to the NFL, with reported interest from the Raiders and Chargers.

What is next for Mike Vrabel?

Vrabel, a beloved former Patriots player, is reportedly a top option for New England if Bill Belichick departs this offseason. There are currently five other coaching openings, including Carolina, Atlanta, Washington, the LA Chargers and Las Vegas.
