Why is Memphis basketball's Mikey Williams in the transfer portal? His father explains

Mikey Williams entered the transfer portal Monday, his father, Mahlon, confirmed to The Commercial Appeal.

The news comes more than 13 months after the 4-star guard signed with the top-15 Tigers but before Williams ever stepped foot on the court for coach Penny Hardaway.

"It's accurate," Mahlon Williams said of 247 Sports' report. "We're gonna see what the interest is like and take it from there."

Mikey Williams was arrested in April 2023 following a shooting that took place outside his California mansion the month before. A legal saga (that has still not been completely resolved) ensued and kept him from formally joining the Tigers' program. He has been listed on the team's roster since last fall and has been enrolled in online classes at Memphis, but he has not been permitted to be around the team or the team's facilities.

Mahlon Williams said his son's decision to enter the transfer portal has "nothing to do with anything at Memphis or what have you."

"Just getting a new start," Mahlon Williams said. "You know, that's all that is. Nothing more than that."

Mahlon Williams added they have not identified any potential destinations nor has his son ruled out a possible reunion with Hardaway and the Tigers.

"We're just doing our due diligence," Mahlon Williams said. "Like I said, it absolutely has nothing to do with Memphis at all. Just, all the circumstances that happened over the last nine months, we just decided we're gonna start this all over again."

Why was Mikey Williams arrested?

Williams was arrested following a shooting outside his San Diego-area mansion last year. The 19-year-old, who finished his prep career at San Ysidro (Calif.) in March 2023, faced nine felony charges, including assault with a weapon, firing into an occupied vehicle and making threats that could result in bodily harm or death.

Upon his arrest, San Diego County authorities said an argument inside Williams' home escalated when gunshots were fired toward a car as it drove away with six people inside. The car was hit, but no one was injured.

Williams pled guilty to the initial charges. But in November, he agreed to a plea deal, pleading guilty to only one felony count of making criminal threats. As part of the deal, the charge is to be reduced to a misdemeanor upon sentencing on Aug. 12 if Williams completes and adheres to a host of conditions.

Hardaway has continued to stand by Williams throughout the ordeal, repeatedly voicing support as the legal process has unfolded.
