Here’s where Missouri football landed in 2nd edition of 2024 CFP rankings

The Tigers got a one-spot boost off the Sooners.

The College Football Playoff committee ranked Missouri football one place higher in its second set of CFP rankings of the season, handing Mizzou the No. 23 overall spot in Tuesday’s release.

The Tigers climbed above Iowa State and Pittsburgh but were surpassed by fellow SEC outfit South Carolina.

Missouri staged one of the more dramatic comebacks of the college football season Saturday against Oklahoma, scoring 14 points in the final 63 seconds to win 30-23 on Faurot Field. Mizzou (7-2, 3-2 SEC) faces South Carolina — which the CFP ranked No. 21 in its latest top 25 — this upcoming Saturday on the road.

The Tigers owe a quick thank-you to rival Kansas for beating Iowa State this past Saturday. The Cyclones previously were the No. 17 team in the committee’s rankings but dropped out of the top 25. Pittsburgh lost for the second time this season, dropping a game against Virginia, and also dropped from No. 18 all the way out.

LSU lost for the third time this year, this one a 42-13 trouncing by Alabama, and dropped from No. 15 to No. 22 to be the first team ranked ahead of Missouri in the poll.

The final rankings release — the one that will decide the 12-team College Football Playoff field — of the season is Sunday, Dec. 9.

After defeating Oklahoma, Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz told sideline reporter Cole Cubelic on the SEC Network broadcast that the comeback win kept Mizzou “in the playoff hunt.”

Missouri needs to win out to earn a berth to the 12-team field, and likely needs several results to fall in its favor.

Mizzou is currently the ninth-ranked SEC team in the CFP’s standings, with Texas (3), Tennessee (7), Alabama (10), Ole Miss (11), Georgia (12); Texas A&M (15); South Carolina (21) and LSU (22) each currently ranked ahead of it in the top 25. There will likely be a maximum of four SEC teams included in the field.

Missouri can jump at least one of those teams, as it faces the Gamecocks on Saturday.
