Where Memphis football landed in college football polls after Week 1

Memphis football narrowly missed out on cracking the top 25 in the US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Poll, both of which were released Tuesday after Week 1 of college football.

The Tigers received 43 votes in the coaches poll, which essentially puts them at No. 28. Memphis was again the highest-ranked Group of Five team, with Boise State (22 votes) essentially ranked No. 30.

Ryan Silverfield's team actually received less votes in the poll than in the preseason edition, but Memphis still moved up from No. 30 to No. 28. The Tigers easily dispatched FCS-level North Alabama, 40-0, in their season opener on Saturday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

The AP poll was different, with Boise State earning more votes than the Tigers. Memphis received 27 votes in that poll, which essentially put them at No. 30.

The challenges will soon get tougher, starting with another home game on Saturday (11 a.m., ESPNU) against Troy (0-1). The Trojans lost their season opener to Nevada but are back-to-back Sun Belt champions. After that, Memphis will go on the road to face Florida State (0-2), which dropped out of the rankings after a dismal start to the season.

Memphis will have a shot to crack the rankings with a win on Saturday, depending on how many ranked teams lose.
