Where Memphis basketball stands in March Madness bracket predictions

Memphis basketball has its sights set on making some March Madness noise.

The Tigers (22-8, 11-6 AAC) are on the fringe of most bracketologists NCAA tournament bubble, but they would take a major step forward with a win at FAU (22-7, 12-4) on Saturday (11 a.m., CBS). The game versus the Owls represents an opportunity for a fourth Quad 1 win for Memphis. Only 27 teams in the country currently have more than four Quad 1 victories.

If Penny Hardaway's team beats FAU again (Memphis won 78-74 on Feb. 25 at FedExForum), it would extend the Tigers winning streak to five games. It would also push the Tigers closer to an NCAA tournament at-large bid. Once considered a lock for a third straight appearance, Memphis went 3-6 between Jan. 18 and Feb. 18. During that stretch, it suffered two Quad 3 losses (South Florida and at Tulane) and a Quad 4 loss (Rice).

Here’s a look at their résumé and where they sit in the latest March Madness projections, with one regular-season game left and the AAC tournament still to go.

Joe Lunardi, ESPN

According to Lunardi's last projection (March 5), the Tigers are at the bottom of the "next four out" category − essentially, the eighth team outside the projected field of 68. He moved Memphis back onto the bubble after its 106-87 home win over UAB.

Lunardi's colleague, John Gasaway, included the Tigers in his latest "Bubble Watch" update in the "work to do" category.

Jerry Palm, CBS

As of Tuesday, like Lunardi, Palm has Memphis as the last team under his "next four out" header. His "first four out" consists of Seton Hall, Iowa, Villanova and Wake Forest. Ahead of the Tigers in Palm's "next four out" are Pitt, Ole Miss and Oregon.

Dave Ommen, Bracketville

Ommen refreshed his bracket Tuesday morning, moving Memphis back onto the bubble. He has the Tigers second-to-last in the "next four out" category. Utah, Iowa, Wake Forest, Providence, Colorado and James Madison are ahead of Memphis in the race for the last spot.

Patrick Stevens, Washington Post

The Tigers are nowhere to be found in Stevens' latest projection, which dropped Tuesday morning.
