Where Eagles rank in 11 biggest collapses in Philadelphia history. Are 1964 Phillies worse?
It's rare to see a team with such high expectations disintegrate as completely as the Eagles have this season.
The Eagles were playing in the Super Bowl just 11 months ago. They seemed well on their way to getting back there with their 10-1 start.
Since then, the Eagles have fallen apart, losing five of their last six games. They went from the No. 1 seed in the NFC to having a road playoff game in Tampa against the Buccaneers on Monday night.
The Eagles lost their final two games to teams with a combined 10-24 record this season, or one fewer win than the 11-6 Eagles.

JOB ON THE LINE? Fire Nick Sirianni? How Eagles' showed they don't care about coach's job in Giants debacle
All of which left Eagles coach Nick Sirianni still confident that his team can turn it around beginning against the Buccaneers.
"Anyone can lead when times are easy," he said. "When times are hard, this is when you see what you’re made of ... And how sweet it will be when we do get out of (the slump) because I know that we will. I know we got the right guys to get out of it.
"I look at it as a challenge, and I’m damn sure up for that challenge."
Are his players? That remains to be seen, but a loss to the Bucs (9-8) would complete one of the worst collapses in Philadelphia pro sports history.
Here, then, is a look at where the 2023 Eagles rank among the top 11 collapses in Philadelphia sports history.
Keep in mind that a team has to be good to begin with in order to collapse. So we're ranking those Eagles, Phillies, 76ers and Flyers teams with championship aspirations that fell short, as opposed to bad teams like "The Process" Sixers of a decade ago that never had a chance.
It should also be noted that some of these collapses didn't occur until the playoffs.
Honorable mention this century: 2002 Eagles, 2003 Eagles, 2010 Phillies.
11. 2001-02 Flyers
The Flyers had a potent offense led by John LeClair, Keith Primeau and Jeremy Roenick, along with midseason pickup Adam Oates. The Flyers won the Atlantic Division and faced the Ottawa Senators in the first round. After winning the first game 1-0 in overtime, the Flyers scored just one goal total over the next four games. Head coach Bill Barber was fired after the season.
10. 2022-23 76ers
This was the Sixers chance to finally get past the second round of the playoffs, against the rival Boston Celtics, no less. The Sixers had won Game 5 in Boston, taking a 3-2 series lead back to Philadelphia for Game 6. The Sixers lost that game as James Harden shot 4-for-16. The series went back to Boston for Game 7, and Harden and the entire team was even worse. The Sixers trailed by 3 points at halftime, then were outscored 33-10 in the third quarter.
Head coach Doc Rivers was fired after three straight second-round exits and Harden demanded a trade. The Sixers obliged.
9. 2023 Phillies
The Phillies were well on their way to a second straight World Series. They had a 3-2 series lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NLCS, needing to win just one of the final two games at raucous Citizens Bank Park in order to advance. The Phillies lost both. Nick Castellanos went hitless in his final 23 at-bats, with 11 strikeouts. Trea Turner went hitless in his final 14 at-bats. And Byrce Harper went hitless in Games 6 and 7.
"It's a disgusting feeling, obviously," Castellanos said after the Game 7 loss.
8. 1981 Eagles
Much like the Eagles of this season, the 1981 version was coming off a Super Bowl defeat. They appeared to be heading back with a 9-2 start. The Eagles then lost four straight before appearing to right the ship with a 38-0 win over the then-St. Louis Cardinals in the finale.
It was fool's gold. The Eagles lost to the Giants in the wild card round. They didn't have another winning season until 1988.
7. 1996-97 Flyers
The Flyers, led by Eric Lindros, were a juggernaut in the postseason, going 12-3 in the first three rounds. That included a 4-1 series win over the Rangers in the Eastern Conference finals. Yet they quickly lost the first three games to the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Finals. After the third loss, Flyers coach Terry Murray called it "a choking situation."
He was right. The Flyers "choked" in Game 4, too, and Murray was fired.
6. 1994 Eagles
Jeffrey Lurie had purchased the team in the spring of 1994 with Rich Kotite in his fourth season as coach. The Eagles started 7-2 behind a rejuvenated Randall Cunningham. They never won another game and missed the playoffs.
In the season finale, the Eagles led 27-10 against the Bengals, who came into the game with a 1-14 record. The Eagles lost 33-30. Kotite was fired the next day.
5. 1983-84 76ers
The Sixers were coming off one of the best seasons in NBA history, and seemed destined to go far in the postseason with pretty much the same team led by Moses Malone, Julius Erving and Maurice Cheeks. It didn't work out. The Sixers lost in the first round, a best-of-5 series, to the underwhelming New Jersey Nets led by Michael Ray Richardson.
4. 2023 Eagles
This team could move up a few places on this list if they lose Monday night to the Buccaneers. A loss could put Sirianni's job in jeopardy, not to mention his coordinators and several veterans. The collapse has been in all phases. In the six games, the Eagles have given up an average of 30.3 points per game, and quarterback Jalen Hurts has a passer rating of 77.6 with 5 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.
3. 2011 Phillies
This is the winningest team in the 140-plus years of Phillies history, with a 102-60 record behind a star-studded pitching staff that included Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels, not to mention top hitters in Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Jimmy Rollins.
The Phillies were overwhelming favorites to make their third World Series appearance in four seasons. Instead, they lost in the first round, a best-of-5 series, to the St. Louis Cardinals as Chris Carpenter outdueled Halladay 1-0 at Citizens Bank Park. The season ingloriously ended when Ryan Howard crumpled to the ground as he tore his Achilles while grounding out.
The Phillies then went 9 straight seasons without a winning record.
2. 2020-21 76ers
The Sixers were the top team in the Eastern Conference, and faced an up-and-coming Atlanta Hawks team in the second round. The Hawks, led by Trae Young, gave the Sixers all they could handle as Philly had to win Game 6 in Atlanta just to force a Game 7 at home. That's when Ben Simmons, with the Sixers trailing by 2 points with 3:29 left, was wide open underneath the basket. Instead of dunking to tie the game, Simmons passed the ball to Matisse Thybulle, who was fouled.
Joel Embiid raised his arms in disbelief while Thybulle made 1 of 2 free throws. The Sixers lost 103-96. Simmons, who didn't take a single shot in the fourth quarter, never played for the Sixers again.
1.1964 Phillies
This one will forever live in Philadelphia infamy as the Phillies coughed up a 6 1/2-game lead with 12 games left. The Phillies, led by star pitchers Jim Bunning, who had earlier in the season pitched a perfect game, and Delaware native Chris Short, lost 10 straight during that debacle. The Cardinals won the NL pennant and went to the World Series.
The Phillies did get a measure of revenge 43 years later when the Mets coughed up a 7 1/2-game lead with 17 games left. Small consolation, though.
