Weather couldn't hold back these girls basketball performances in Bucks County, Montco
Despite cancellations and delays due to two snow storms, last week featured a full slate of standout performances in girls high school basketball, including coaching and college milestones.
Another page in the history books for legendary Pennsbury coach
Frank Sciolla is already a legend in the Bucks County basketball community. But he added to his legacy in a major way on Thursday night, when he won his 500th career game. He is believed to be just the third coach to reach the milestone in Bucks County. In this 28th year of coaching, Sciolla previously coached Bristol, Conwell-Egan and Pennsbury boys basketball before taking over the Falcons’ girls team in 2016. Since then, he’s led the Falcons to an incredible 135-61 record.
Thursday’s milestone win, earned in front of the Falcons’ devoted home crowd, wasn’t without its dramatics. Pennsbury trailed CB South 29-25 heading into the fourth quarter, but a dominant final period secured the 43-33 victory.
College Performer of the Week: Mikaela Reese, DeSales University, Souderton Class of 2020
What a week it was for the DeSales University senior and Souderton grad. On Thursday, Reese scored her 1,000th career point in the Bulldogs’ 68-48 win against Stevens, when she poured in game-high 21 points Two days later, Reese became the programs’ all-time blocks leader with 187 career blocks. Reese blocked five shots, and contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, in Saturday’s 70-48 victory over Delaware Valley University, surpassing Bridget Walsh (2019) for the record.
Top Performances of the Week in Girls Basketball:
Milestone of the Week: Caleigh Sperling, North Penn
The high-scoring senior reached a coveted milestone on Wednesday night, scoring her 1,000th career point in a win over Bensalem. Needing 17 points for the feat, Sperling reached the milestone late in the fourth quarter, hitting a 3-pointer that also secured a 51-46 victory. The Thomas Jefferson University commit finished with 23 points in the win, and is averaging 17 points per game, including three games with 20-plus points.
Piper McGinley, Abington
McGinley was a difference-maker in all facets of the game in a win over Tennent. In addition to scoring eight points, she dished out 10 assists, grabbed six rebounds and had six steals.
Lily Milewski, Conwell-Egan
The junior had a standout performance against one of the best teams in the Catholic League. Milewski led all scorers with 24 points, on 79 percent shooting, and had six rebounds and two steals as the Eagles fell 85-74 to tough Neumann-Goretti (11-2). She had 16 points and 8 rebounds in a win over Archbishop Ryan.
Brooke McFadden, Conwell-Egan
The senior recorded a double-double against Neumann-Goretti, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, along with four assists and four steals.
Mya Aizen, Conwell-Egan
The senior made her long-awaited return to court after suffering an ACL tear last season. In just her second game back, Aizen scored nine points, going 4-for-4 from the floor, pulled down six rebounds and contributed two assists and one steal in just 17 minutes against Neumann-Goretti, one of the top teams in the Catholic League.
Layla Matthias, Pennsbury
She was dominant on the glass in Pennsbury’s comeback win over CB South, grabbing 14 offensive rebounds, along with three on the defensive end.
Joley Hohman, Pennsbury
The freshman’s productive fourth quarter helped the Falcons secure a come-from-behind win against CB South. Hohman scored five of her seven points in the final frame, while also creating shots for her teammates and playing strong defense. She had eight points and four assists in a win over Conwell-Egan.
Sofia Vitucci, Pennsbury
The senior scored seven of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, powering the Falcons to a 43-33 win, after trailing by five points to start the fourth. She also contributed seven rebounds, and had a game-high 22 points in a victory against neighboring Conwell-Egan.
Makayla Finnegan, Archbishop Wood
The freshman helped orchestrate a furious comeback win against Archbishop Carroll, with the Vikings trailing by 11. She scored the go-ahead basket in the final minute, and took a charge on the next possession which helped seal the 51-46 victory.
Emily Knouse, Archbishop Wood
Knouse’s huge fourth quarter, which included nine points, two steals and two blocks, ignited a comeback win against Archbishop Carroll. She finished with 17 points.
Olivia Stone, North Penn
She had a game-high 19 points in a win over Truman, and a game-high 14 points in a win over Methacton.
Gianna Rahill, CB South
The senior scored her first-ever varsity points in Wednesday’s win over Harry S. Truman. Rahill started as a team manager before making the JV team last season and then moving up to varsity this year. Rahill came off the bench in the fourth quarter and connected on a driving layup.
Amber Howard, Bensalem
Howard continued to dominate at the net, scoring 20 points, along with 15 rebounds, in a close loss to North Penn. She had 24 points in a win against New Hope-Solebury, which was the sixth 20-point game this season for the senior, who is averaging 18 points.
Talia DiMichele, Bensalem
The junior dished out 10 assists, a career-high and the most for an Owls player in a game in the past four seasons, and scored eight points in a win over New Hope-Solebury.
Lola Ibarrondo, Neshaminy
The senior helped Neshaminy to a come-from-behind win, scoring 19 points and contributing three rebounds, three assists, and three steals against Pennridge. She did it again against CB West, tallying 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals in a 39-35 comeback victory.
Reese Zemitis, Neshaminy
Zemitis scored 12 points in a win against Bishop Shanahan on Sunday, moving into fifth place on Neshaminy’s all-time scoring leaders list. Earlier in the week, she had a game-high 18 points, with 16 in the second half, to orchestrate a comeback win against CB West, after trailing by seven at halftime.
Yamazjiah Thomas, Harry S. Truman
The senior had a game-high 19 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, though the Tigers fell short of the win against Pennridge. She followed with 15 points in a loss to North Penn, scoring eight of the Tigers’ 10 first-quarter points.
Lilly Hansen, Upper Moreland
The junior led all scorers with 14 points to propel the Golden Bears to their first win over Plymouth Whitemarsh in 21 games. Hansen had nine of her points in the first half, helping UM to a 21-12 halftime lead, and also had several blocks.
Natalie Berndt, CB East
The sophomore paced the Patriots with 14 points, and was also a force on defense against Abington, as CB East dealt the Ghosts their first loss in seven games in the 51-39 win.
Olivia Boccella, Lansdale Catholic
Boccella poured in 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, in the Crusaders win over St. Hubert’s. Last week, Boccella had 10 3s against Archbishop Ryan, which tied the Catholic League record, according to Philadelphia Sports Digest. Ironically, Ryan senior Delaney Finn who set the record last season.

Izzy Elizondo, New Hope-Solebury
The junior sank seven 3-pointers en route to a game-high 27 points in a close loss to Bensalem. It was Elizondo’s second straight game scoring 20-plus points.
Morgan Volz, William Tennent
Volz scored 13 points in the second half, finishing with a game-high 25 points, as the Panthers fell just short against Abington.
Gabby Bowes, Germantown Academy
Bowes had a perfect night at the Maggie Lucas Classic. She went 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line for a game-high 14 points in a win over CR South.
Amirah Bell, Bristol
She scored seven points, including a pair of game-clinching free throws, and also had five steals in a 39-36 win over Parkway.
Paris White, Bristol
The senior was dominant on the boards, pulling down 16 rebounds to lead the Warriors to a win over rival Morrisville on Bristol’s Senior Night.
Kathryn O’Kane, CR South
She had 11 of her game-high 18 points after halftime as the Golden Hawks outscored Inter-Ac leader Germantown Academy 29-26 in the second half but fell short of a comeback victory.
