As we launch the season, we'll focus on football for Week 1. Free Press high school sports legend Mick McCabe scoured the state for top performers. Below is information on five players for you to vote on. Tell us your pick for this week's Athlete of the Week. We'll announce the winner on Friday morning.

Tommy Carr, Saline: In his first varsity start, the junior quarterback completed 21 of 31 passes for 267 yards and four touchdowns, and ran for a score as Saline defeated Brighton, 41-20.

Cameron Gunsell, Ludington: The junior quarterback completed 9 of 12 passes for 173 yards and three touchdowns, and carried the ball eight times for 181 yards and four TDs in a 67-0 victory over Alpena.

Elliott Larner, DeWitt: The senior quarterback completed 7 of 13 passes for 277 yards and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball 15 times for 260 yards and four scores as DeWitt defeated Haslett, 69-42.

Donovan Triplett, Walled Lake Western: The junior tailback ran for 211 yards and scored two touchdowns as Walled Lake Western defeated Waterford Mott, 52-14.

Damion Watton, Ortonville Brandon: The junior fullback carried the ball 31 times and gained 257 yards as Brandon defeated Bay City Glenn, 43-7.
