Vintage Ichiro robs Jose Ramirez of home run over wall in front of Mariners home crowd

This is why you go to the ball park if you’re a Mariners fan.

Ichiro Suzuki, brought back this offseason to Seattle where he became a baseball icon and built a Hall of Fame career, got the start in left field on Saturday against the Cleveland Indians.

Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez took the plate in the top of the third inning to face Mariners starter James Paxton. Paxton left a pitch over the heart of the plate that Ramirez caught pure and appeared headed over the left-field wall at Safeco Park into the Indians bullpen.

Then this happened.

Wow. What a catch. And what a treat for the hometown fans, especially those sitting in the left-field bleachers. The video is great, too, from the Indians pitchers in the bullpen bracing to protect themselves from the ball that would never get there to a fuming Ramirez walking back to the dugout after being robbed.

Ichiro, 44, came back to Seattle this year after six years with the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins as the 25th player on the roster, expected to get spot playing time and be an occasional draw for fans. He’s gotten the start in left field for both games of Seattle’s home opening series this week.

If he keeps making plays like this, he may earn some more playing time. The Mariners certainly wouldn’t mind having their hands forced if that ends up being the case.
