U.S. Open betting: Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler open as favorites

The last two major champions are among the top three early favorites to win the U.S. Open at Brookline.

Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are each at +1200 at BetMGM to win the third major of the season next weekend. Thomas won the PGA Championship in May in a playoff over Will Zalatoris after he surged up the leaderboard on the final day. Scheffler dominated the Masters in April and won by three shots even after a double bogey on the 72nd hole.

All three players are entered in this weekend’s RBC Canadian Open. The tournament is back for the first time since 2019 and is the final warmup event for the U.S. Open. And, not so coincidentally, they’re the top three favorites for the RBC. Scheffler is the favorite at +800, Thomas is at +900 and McIlroy is at +1000.

McIlroy finished second to Scheffler at the Masters and was the Thursday leader at the PGA. He finished in a tie for 18th at the Memorial a week ago after he finished in the top 10 in his previous three starts. He sandwiched his top-10 finishes at the first two majors of the year around a fifth-place finish at the Wells Fargo.

Perennial favorite Jon Rahm is the No. 4 golfer on the board at +1400 while Players Championship winner Cam Smith is at +1600. Dustin Johnson is No. 6 on the board at +1800 in his first major after his resignation from the PGA Tour. Johnson is reportedly pocketing over $100 million to be a part of Saudi Arabia’s LIV Golf venture and is playing in the new golf organization’s inaugural event opposite the RBC Canadian Open.

Three-time major winner Brooks Koepka is at +2000 to win. He hasn’t played since finishing in a tie for 55th at the PGA. That was his first start since missing the cut at the Masters. Koepka hasn’t finished inside the top 10 since he tied for third at the WM Phoenix Open in February. His last win came at Phoenix in 2021.

Here’s a look at the early favorites for what typically is the toughest major of the year. Earlier Tuesday, Tiger Woods said that he wouldn't be competing in the tournament. Woods has struggled in both the Masters and PGA in his first two starts since his 2021 car crash.

His absence means that bettors will likely be looking for other golfers to wager on. Woods was the biggest liability in BetMGM history ahead of the PGA Championship. Had he improbably won the tournament, the sportsbook would have taken its biggest single event loss ever.
