Updates on 11 players on injured lists for 49ers
Injuries have hovered over the entire San Francisco 49ers' 2024 season.
It began in training camp when the injury issues stacked up to the point the club had to cancel joint practices with the New Orleans Saints. Then during the preseason they had a couple of key players banged up, and the trend continued into the regular season with several players dealing with varying degrees of injury issues.
With wide receiver Ricky Pearsall having his practice window opened Monday, we thought it would be a good time to run through where things stand for the 49ers on Injured Reserve, the Physically Unable to Perform list, and the Non-Football Injury list.
WR Ricky Pearsall, NFI
InjuryPearsall was shot through the chest during an attempted robbery the week before the regular season began.
Will he return?Yes. The 49ers opened his 21-day practice window Monday heading into Week 7, which is an indication they anticipate him getting back onto the field within that three-week timeframe. How much he contributes remains to be seen, but overall it's a good sign that he's practicing.
LB Dre Greenlaw, PUP
InjuryAn Achilles tear took Greenlaw down in the Super Bowl.
Will he return? It's unclear whether the 49ers' star linebacker will be back in action this season. There's optimism that he'll be able to suit up in 2024, although it wouldn't likely be until late in the year. Greenlaw can have his practice window opened at any point now that he's cleared the four-week mark.
DE Drake Jackson, PUP
InjuryPatellar tendon surgery last offseason was supposed to have Jackson ready for training camp this year. He suffered a setback though and was placed on PUP before returning for camp.
Will he return? He's not eligible to return this season.
OL Jon Feliciano, IR
InjuryFeliciano had knee surgery after dealing with a knee issue throughout the first part of training camp.
Will he return? There's a chance he comes back. Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated when Feliciano went down that he'd be out about half the season. He's eligible to return now.
DL Yetur Gross-Matos, IR
InjuryGross-Matos sustained a knee sprain in the preseason finale and was in and out of the lineup before going on IR after Week 4.
Will he return? The 49ers expect Gross-Matos to return this year. The earliest he can return is in Week 9, which is San Francisco's bye week.
DL Javon Hargrave, IR
InjuryHargrave suffered a partially torn triceps in Week 3 that required surgery.
Will he return? There's an outside chance he could come back if the team makes a deep playoff run, but for all intents and purposes his season is over.
SS Talanoa Hufanga, IR
InjuryTorn wrist ligaments landed Hufanga on IR just three weeks into his return from an ACL tear.
Will he return?Hufanga is expected to come back in 2024. Week 10 is the earliest he's eligible to get back on the field.
RB Christian McCaffrey, IR
InjuryBi-lateral Achilles tendinitis has plagued McCaffrey since Week 17 of last season and cost him virtually all of training camp.
Will he return?Supposedly! The 49ers haven't given any timetable for his return, but he's ramping up his rehab and it wouldn't be a surprise if the club is eyeing some time after the bye.
RB Elijah Mitchell, IR
InjuryMitchell suffered a severe hamstring injury during training camp.
Will he return?Since he went on IR before final cuts with no return designation, Mitchell won't be back this season. He may also have played his last snap for the 49ers with free agency looming.
LB Curtis Robinson, IR
InjuryRobinson tore his ACL in practice leading up to Week 4.
Will he return? He won't be back this year.
CB Ambry Thomas, IR
InjuryThomas fractured his forearm in the 49ers' preseason opener vs. the Tennessee Titans.
Will he return? It's not entirely clear what the plan is for Thomas. He made the initial 53-man roster before being placed on IR. He's eligible to return any time, but there doesn't appear to be a path to the roster for him as long as the 49ers are healthy in the secondary.
