UNC's 2024 football schedule highlighted amongst ESPN's seasons to watch

After a grueling schedule last season, the UNC football team will face – at least on paper – much less difficulty this fall.

North Carolina starts with a true road game to open its 2024 campaign on Thursday, Aug. 29 at the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The next three weeks should be easier for the Tar Heels, as they host FCS school North Carolina Central, Conference USA basement-dweller UNC-Charlotte and Sun Belt power James Madison in consecutive weeks at home.

After hosting three straight home games, UNC heads to archrival Duke to close out September. The Tar Heels then return to host Pitt and Georgia Tech, the latter a program it consistently struggles against, before heading to ACC rivals UVA and Florida State.

That means the Tar Heels won't play a game outside of the state of North Carolina from August 30th to October 25th, as ESPN notes in their schedule review article.

"North Carolina plays only one game outside the state of North Carolina before traveling to face Virginia on Oct. 26," ESPN's Chris Low wrote. "The Tar Heels open the season at Minnesota on Thursday, Aug. 29, then play six straight games in their home state before having an off week. Then they finally hit the road to face the Cavaliers."

Three of North Carolina's four September home games are in Kenan Stadium, with the fourth being 25 minutes away in Durham. This means a lot of fan support, which indirectly helps teams with their on-field performance.
