UNC football vs Georgia Tech: Scouting report, prediction for Tar Heels, Yellow Jackets

UNC football will try to end a pair of losing streaks this weekend when Georgia Tech visits Kenan Stadium on Saturday (Noon, CW Network).

The Tar Heels (3-3, 0-2 ACC) have lost their last three games this season and three in a row against the Yellow Jackets (4-2, 2-2), who haven’t lost to UNC since 2019.

Georgia Tech, which has won five of its last seven games against the Heels, handed Duke (5-1, 1-1) its first loss of the season in Week 6. UNC is still searching for its first ACC victory since beating the Blue Devils in November 2023.

Here’s a look at things to watch and a score prediction for UNC vs. Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King vs Geoff Collins, UNC’s defense

The Yellow Jackets have scored at least 40 points in two of the last three games against UNC, including a 46-42 win last season in Atlanta. Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King faced little resistance against the Heels in that game, finishing with 287 passing yards, along with 90 rushing yards and four touchdowns. In its Week 6 loss to Pitt, UNC’s defense, coordinated by former Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins, saw quarterback Eli Holstein log 457 yards and four TDs. It could be a long afternoon for the Tar Heels.

Give it to UNC running back Omarion Hampton

Defenses know what’s coming and they still have a hard time slowing down UNC running back Omarion Hampton. The junior has rushed for 100 or more yards in four straight games, with seven touchdowns. Hampton had 153 yards and two TDs last season against the Yellow Jackets. However, Georgia Tech, which is 11th nationally in rushing defense (87.5 rushing yards per game), hasn’t allowed a player to reach 100 rushing yards through six games.

UNC wide receiver Nate McCollum vs Georgia Tech

With 10 catches for 128 yards against Pitt, UNC wide receiver Nate McCollum became the first Tar Heel wideout to reach 100 receiving yards this season. The former Yellow Jacket will face a Georgia Tech defense that is 109th in passing efficiency. In its two losses, Georgia Tech allowed an average of 325 passing yards and six passing TDs.

UNC vs Georgia Tech score prediction

Georgia Tech 29, UNC 26: The Yellow Jackets have dominated this series of late and the Tar Heels haven’t been able to stop their slide since the stunning loss to James Madison. Another loss seems likely for UNC.
