UNC basketball’s transfer portal targets include Jonas Aidoo, Cliff Omoruyi
UNC basketball has reportedly been busy targeting players from the transfer portal to gauge their interest in joining the Tar Heels ahead of the 2024-25 season.
Armando Bacot, Cormac Ryan and Paxson Wojcik won’t be a part of next year’s group, and Seth Trimble, a top reserve, entered the transfer portal. As of Wednesday afternoon, starters RJ Davis and Harrison Ingram have yet to make decisions on whether to return for the Tar Heels or pursue other opportunities.
Head coach Hubert Davis will have a trio of freshmen — Ian Jackson, Drake Powell and James Brown — joining the Tar Heels this summer, but what other newcomers will be on the team?
Here’s a look at four players UNC has reportedly recruited in the portal to possibly join the 2024-25 roster.
Cliff Omoruyi, Rutgers center
According to 247Sports, Omoruyi is the fifth-ranked player in the portal. The 6-foot-11, 240-pound graduate transfer is known for his shot-blocking ability. Omoruyi averaged 10.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He blocked 93 shots last season for the Scarlet Knights and, according to KenPom.com, was third in the nation in block percentage (12.72%). Omoruyi's presence in the post would help fill the void left by Bacot.
Jonas Aidoo, Tennessee center
According to 247Sports, Aidoo is the 10th-ranked player in the portal. The Durham native averaged 11.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game as a junior. An All-SEC selection, the 6-foot-11 center also blocked 66 shots. Aidoo was 36th in block percentage (8.7%) and 72nd in offensive rebounding percentage (12.4%). Like Omoruyi, Aidoo's rebounding and defensive prowess would be a welcome addition in Chapel Hill to start the post-Bacot era.
Cade Tyson, Belmont forward
According to 247Sports, Tyson is the 30th-ranked player in the portal. The 6-foot-7 wing from Monroe is known as a sharpshooter, which would help replace Ryan’s production on the perimeter. Tyson drilled 46.5% of his attempts from 3, which was the 15th-best percentage in the nation. He averaged 16.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game as a sophomore. Tyson made multiple treys in 21 of 31 games, including nine with at least four 3-pointers.
Danny Wolf, Yale center
According to 247Sports, Wolf is the 14th-ranked player in the portal. The 7-footer averaged 14.1 points and 9.7 rebounds as a sophomore for the Bulldogs, who upset Auburn in the NCAA Tournament. Wolf shot 34.5% from 3-point range and had 14 double-doubles last season.
