The Sun Belt Conference honors are rolling in for Louisiana football. On Monday, Ragin' Cajuns linebacker Cameron Whitefield was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week.

The junior outside linebacker earned this recognition after the Cajuns' 23-13 win over conference rivals Southern Miss on Oct. 5. He tied a school record with four sacks, leading his team's defense to its first victory over the Golden Eagles in over 30 years. After not recording a sack for the first four games of the season, Whitfield had himself a sack party matching Rodney Hardeway's record for single-game sacks.

He also recorded six total tackles in the contest and helped apply all kinds of pressure to Southern Miss' offense. Whitfield forced two fumbles in the fourth quarter thus helping the Cajuns pull away in the second half.

"We knew it was a conference game so we knew we had to give it our all, put everything on the line," Whitfield said after UL football's win over Southern Miss. "My mindset was to just play like me and do me. When I put my mind to it, I went out and did it. That was our mindset on the D-line."

Standing at 6-foot-3 and 241 pounds, Whitfield has been a big force on that side of the ball for UL and has been a leader in the trenches. So far this season, he has 14 total tackles and four tackles for loss. This marks the second SBC weekly honor in his career and the second SBC weekly honor for a Cajuns' player this season.
