UFC 285 full results: Jon Jones submits Ciryl Gane in first round; Alexa Grasso shocks Valentina Shevchenko
Jon Jones, one of the most talented and polarizing fighters in UFC history, returned Saturday at UFC 285 from a three-year layoff 44 pounds heavier and it was like he never left.
The former light heavyweight champion quickly submitted Ciryl Gane in the main event of a stacked pay-per-view card that also featured a stunning upset of Valentina Shevchenko by Alexa Grasso for the flyweight title she had held since December 2018. Grasso's win ended Shevchenko's nine-fight winning streak and her eight-fight championship winning streak.
Jones now holds the UFC heavyweight title that was stripped from Francis Ngannou when he was unable to come to terms with the UFC on a new contract. Jones had never fought anyone as big and as athletic as Gane, a one-time interim champion. Yet it still took him less than three minutes to finish the fight and win a title in a second-weight class.
Jones hadn’t fought since defeating Dominick Reyes at UFC 247 on Feb. 8, 2020, in Houston. Gane is one of the greatest all-around athletes in the UFC. He's fit, quick, explosive and presents numerous problems for his opponents. That is, until he met Jones and pretty much had nothing for the guy who is considered by many as the greatest MMA fighter of all time.
