U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials: what to know and how to watch Simone Biles

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The last of the major U.S. Olympic trials is set to get underway on Thursday as the nation’s best gymnasts converge in Minneapolis.

The gymnastics trials will take place over four days at the Target Center to determine the 10 gymnasts that will travel to Paris and represent Team USA. While Columbus-born Simone Biles will grab the attention and be the favorite to lead the women’s team, multiple star gymnasts and former Olympians will grace the floor in an action-packed meet to end June.

Here is everything you need to know about the U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials

How to qualify

Five men and five women will make up the numbers for the US gymnastics teams with two traveling alternates as well that will be named.

For the men, the top all-around gymnast who competes in all six apparatus’ will qualify only if they come in the top three in three of those apparatuses. The other four spots will be decided by the selection committee, who will take into account a possible highest team-score based off the results at trials.

The top all-around gymnast competing in four apparatus’ will automatically earn an Olympic place. The selection committee will choose the other four gymnasts based on the same criteria as the men.

Athletes to watch

Simone Biles: The greatest gymnast of all-time looks certain to make her third Olympics team and take back her all-around gold. Born in Columbus, Biles has won seven Olympic medals and a 23 world-championship golds. She would be the fourth American to make three Olympic gymnastics teams.

Brody Malone: The three-time American all-around winner is returning from a knee injury and is a favorite on the men’s side. Malone was on the Tokyo Olympics squad but did not earn a medal.

Sunisa Lee: The defending Olympic all-around winner from Saint Paul will be the home crowd favorite this week. Lee, 21, burst onto the gymnastics scene winning the Tokyo gold with Biles opting out of the all-around final. The two former all-around champions could form an American super team in Paris.

Frederick Richard: Another favorite to qualify on the men’s side is 20-year-old Richard from Boston. The current Michigan Wolverine is eyeing his first Olympic spot as a two-time all-around winner at the Pan American games and the 2023 NCAA all-around champion.

Shilese Jones: Jones, of Seattle, is the other women’s gymnast to watch as another strong all-around performer. Jones’ family moved to Columbus in 2014, where she trained before returning to Washington state.

Yul Moldauer: One of the most successful college gymnasts is looking to make his second Olympic team. Moldauer, 27, earned 10 NCAA titles with Oklahoma and has won eight golds at the Pan American games.
