Tyrese Hunter, Texas basketball close regular season with rout over Oklahoma
Texas rode a red-hot showing from guard Tyrese Hunter to pull away from Oklahoma for a 94-80 win in Saturday’s regular-season finale at Moody Center.
Now, the Longhorns may just have to get ready for a rematch.
Texas (19-11, 8-9 Big 12) locked up no worse than the eighth seed in next week's Big 12 Tournament, depending on Saturday evening's TCU-Central Florida outcome; a UCF win could bump Texas as high as the No. 7 seed.

However, a TCU win means Texas would face ninth-seeded Oklahoma (20-11, 8-10) in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday for the third time this season. Texas won its two meetings with Oklahoma by a combined 29 points.
Despite that success, Texas coach Rodney Terry cautioned against overconfidence in a potential third meeting with the Sooners and coach Porter Moser.
"You're never excited to play against Oklahoma," Terry said. "They're a well-coached team and they're a hard-playing team. They don't beat themselves; you have to beat Oklahoma. You have to value taking care of the basketball, you have to execute on offense and you've got to sit down and guard. They're always very, very difficult to play against."
The Sooners probably don’t want to see Hunter — or any Longhorn, for that matter — again anytime soon. The 6-foot guard scored a career-high 30 points and almost single-handedly ended OU’s hope for a road win. He scored 14 of his points in the first eight minutes of the second half, when Texas stretched a 40-35 halftime edge to a 19-point advantage.
Even though he had a career night for points to go along with seven assists, Hunter still cited defense as the key to his success.
"It all starts on defense," he said. "That's where I get my energy from, my confidence from. I just keep my mentality that is starts with defense and everything else is going to flow on offense."

Hunter had plenty of help from Dylan Disu, one of four players celebrating Senior Day festivities along with Brock Cunningham, Max Abmas and Ithiel Horton.
It didn’t take Disu long to quiet any concerns about his health. After battling a stomach bug all week and suffering a slight knee sprain in Monday’s loss at Baylor, he opened the scoring with a layup and followed it with a 3-pointer. He had 12 of his 16 points as Texas built a 40-35 lead by the break.
Dillon Mitchell scored 14 points, his most in a game since racking up 16 in a loss to Houston Jan. 29. As a team, Texas shot 63.5% from the floor and made 22-of-23 free throws.
The game was especially meaningful for Cunningham, the Austin native and Westlake graduate who matched former McNeil star AJ Abrams for most games played by a Longhorn with 144. He also moved into a tie with Abrams and Abrams’ former teammate, Connor Atchley, for most wins by any Texas player at 109.
The Big 12 Tournament begins Tuesday in Kansas City, Mo.
