Tyrese Haliburton, USA fail to medal in FIBA World Cup

Tyrese Haliburton of the Indiana Pacers is a point guard for USA in the FIBA World Cup, taking place in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan through Sept. 10.

The Americans (5-3) fell to Canada 127-118 in overtime in the bronze-medal game as Dillon Brooks scored 39 points and Shea Gilgeous-Alexander added 31. Canada shot 51% from the field and 45% on 3-pointers.

Haliburton made two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter -- his only points of the game -- as the USA rallied from a 9-point deficit to extend the game on Mikal Bridges' 3-pointer with 2 seconds to go. Canada started overtime with a 7-1 run to take the lead for good.

Purdue center Zach Edey played 2 minutes for Canada, grabbing 1 rebound.

Lithuania hit its first 9 3-pointers on the way to a 21-point first-quarter lead. The Americans trimmed their deficit to 4 points in the third quarter but could not get closer.

Anthony Edwards had 35 points for the USA, which was -16 in rebounding as Lithuania had 18 offensive boards.

Despite the loss, the USA has qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
