Twitter erupts after bad game of telephone kills Wizards-Suns-Grizzlies trade
A simple trade that was supposed to be bring Trevor Ariza back to the Washington Wizards and send some young talent to the Memphis Grizzlies and Phoenix Suns turned into one of the most raucous nights in the history of NBA Twitter.
As details of the trade leaked out, the framework was established as Trevor Ariza to the Wizards, Kelly Oubre to the Grizzlies and Austin Rivers, Wayne Selden and Brooks to the Suns, with some second-round picks also being exchanged.
You might notice a first name missing in there. The Suns and Grizzlies certainly did when they were asked to confirm the trade.
Reportedly, the Suns believed they were receiving promising young wing Dillon Brooks. On the other hand, the Grizzlies thought they were shipping out veteran journeyman MarShon Brooks. As you might expect, it was all reportedly the Wizards’ fault, and it led to the two teams spiking the deal.
Deal's suddenly in peril. Memphis and Phoenix didn't communicate directly on trade, using Washington as a conduit in coordinating the 3-team deal, sources tell @ZachLowe_NBA and me. Grizzlies believe they were trading MarShon, but somehow Suns believed it was Dillon.

And so we now go to the incredible mixture of disbelief, speculation and unbridled joy that hit Twitter once it figured out just what was happening.
Twitter reacts to the Wizards, Suns and Grizzlies unfathomable miscommunication

Are we sure the Suns didn’t think they’d get Scott Brooks?

This ends with Mel Brooks playing in the NBA. https://t.co/VbyrrfuFrd

This is unbelievable, but also very believable.

Can we make an Oubre Grizzlies jersey anyway? I mean we have a Melo Hawks jersey

I’m imagining this conversation right now:
“Did you really think we meant MarShon?!!!”
“DID YOU REALLY THINK WE MEANT DILLON?!!!!!!"

Huh the Wizards ended up being the least incompetent team in a trade. https://t.co/nnkCNgkieV

Not everyone was joking around though, as some noted the human toll miscommunications like this can take. Every player involved in the deal now knows his team was ready to ship him away, and that can be a surreal feeling. It also isn’t great for a Wizards locker room that already seemed to be on the brink of devolving into a Mad Max-style Thunderdome of omnidirectional animosity.
OK, don’t get me wrong, this is hilarious from a distance. But this genuinely sucks for thos involved. Getting traded sucks, getting traded and then yanked is really painful. https://t.co/3n9D1mQhiU

The Wizards' locker room had a notably uncomfortable vibe after the game today. News of the trade broke almost immediately in conjunction with the final buzzer. I cannot even imagine what it will feel like if Rivers and Oubre are at practice tomorrow.

Other than Trevor Ariza, who I assume is ready to be traded anywhere & will eventually wind up somewhere (possibly even with a contender), there are going to be some very awkward reunions for the other guys involved in this dead deal
— Michael Lee (@MrMichaelLee) December 15, 2018
The Wizards locker room if this trade gets pulled back…
— Jeff Siegel (@jgsiegel) December 15, 2018
Austin Rivers had team staffers coming up to him and patting him on the back. They were saying their goodbyes — so yeah. This is going to be awkward tomorrow.

Plenty of NBA players also had some reactions as the trade was unfolding then refolding.
