Minnesota Twins owner Bill Pohlad is stepping up to help fight racial injustice in Minnesota and across the country.

In a statement released Wednesday, the president of the Pohlad Family Foundation announced his organization is committing $25 million to social justice causes in response to the murder of George Floyd, who was killed by a Minneapolis police officer on May 25.

"Black people have experienced oppression and racism for far too long in this country," Pohlad said in the statement. “We condemn racism in all its forms, and we are firmly committed to helping to enact meaningful change. We know this will take time and effort, and we are committed to this work beyond this seminal moment in our country's history."

The Twins were among the first sports teams to release a statement following Floyd’s death and have remained a consistent voice amid protests throughout the country. The donation by Pohlad solidifies their stance and ensures their impact will go far beyond words.

Vikings announce donation

The Twins weren’t the only Minnesota sports team to make a financial commitment.

The Minnesota Vikings and the Wilf family announced they will be making a $5 million donation to social justice causes throughout the United States.

In addition, the Vikings announced an endowment for the George Floyd Legacy Scholarship.

The $125,000 establishing gift will be used to give $5,000 each year to black high school seniors in the Twin Cities metro area who are pursuing post-secondary education.
