Manchester United-Juventus was the marquee attraction on Tuesday as the UEFA Champions League group stage resumed following the international break, but there was plenty of star power on display elsewhere, too.

Real Madrid finally won a game, beating visiting Czech side Viktoria Plzen on an 11th minute Karim Benzema goal to end a miserable stretch of five matches without a victory across all competitions. The early strike was Benzema’s 57th in the Champions League, moving the French striker past Ruud van Nistelrooy and into sole possession of fourth place on the all-time scoring chart behind Cristiano Ronaldo (120), Lionel Messi (105) and Raul (71). Marcelo added a second for the hosts 10 minutes into the second half to put the match away:

Plzen pulled one back late, making the final moments of the match uncomfortable for embattled Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui. But the three points should ease some of the pressure on Lopetegui, at least until Sunday’s Clasico against Spanish rival Barcelona.

In the Ukraine, Manchester City made quick work of Shakhtar Donetsk, riding first-half goals by David Silva and Aymeric Laporte en route to a 3-0 win. It was that ugly for the home side. Check out the defending on Laporte’s header. Nonexistent:

Roma dispatched visiting CSKA Moscow by the same lopsided scoreline, with Edin Dzeko scoring twice. Earlier Tuesday, German powerhouse Bayern Munich rolled to a 2-0 triumph at AEK Athens, while pathetically-named Swiss club Young Boys held La Liga rep Valencia to a more than respectable 1-1 stalemate in Bern.

The goal of the day may have come from Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele, who blasted home his side’s second half equalizer away to Hoffenheim from a tight angle. That match ended 3-3, and it was as insane as you might think. Lyon blew two separate leads, the second when Hoffenheim substitute Joelinton rescued a point for the hosts in the second minute of stoppage time.

Not to be outdone in the drama department was Ajax-Benfica. The tilt between two of the European game’s most storied teams was a scoreless through 90 minutes despite the two sides generating 30 shots, almost half of them on target. Benfica keeper Odisseas Vlachodimos made nine saves, but he couldn’t keep out defender Noussair Mazraoui’s winner just seconds before the final whistle.
