Troubled former NFL standout Aldon Smith arrested again for DUI
Missouri native Aldon Smith has been arrested again, this time for suspicion of driving under the influence.
Smith hasn’t played in the NFL since 2015.
Via the Kansas City Star, Smith was arrested in the town of Mission, Kansas, a suburban town southwest of Kansas City.
Police initially stopped the 29-year-old on a traffic violation just before midnight Monday, but he was arrested on suspicion of DUI and taken to the Mission police station.
A Mission PD spokesman told the Star that Smith was issued citations and released to a friend. The specifics of the municipal charges were not available.
A star at nearby Raytown High in Missouri and the University of Missouri, Smith was the seventh pick in the 2011 draft, selected by the San Francisco 49ers. On the field, he played to his promise: he set an NFL record with 33.5 sacks in his first two seasons, including 19.5 in 2012.
But his off-field issues began piling up, and the Niners cut him in August 2015, after his fifth run-in with police.
The Oakland Raiders signed him just weeks later, and Smith played in nine games before the NFL suspended him for at least a year.
He applied for reinstatement in 2016 but the decision was deferred until the off-season; ultimately he was never granted reinstatement.
The Raiders cut Smith in March 2018 after police in San Francisco said they were looking for him in connection with a domestic violence allegation. The San Francisco Chronicle reported Smith pleaded no contest last November to two misdemeanors — violating a court order and false imprisonment for an attack on a woman.
He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, which could be served in a residential drug and alcohol treatment center, and three years probation. He was also required to undergo 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling and complete 25 hours of community service.
