Trinity basketball coach Mike Szabo taking temporary leave because of health issues
Trinity High School basketball coach Mike Szabo will be away from the team “temporarily due to some health issues,” athletic director Rob Saxton announced Monday.
Bret Saxton, Rob’s son, will serve as acting head coach until Szabo returns.
Trinity (15-4) is ranked No. 4 in the state in the Kentucky High School Basketball Media Poll. The Shamrocks are set to return to action Tuesday, hosting Christian Academy at 7:30 p.m.
Szabo is in his 23rd season as Trinity’s head coach and has a 526-192 record. He’s led the Shamrocks to six Seventh Region titles and two state championships (2012 and 2019).
Szabo missed the King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic held Dec. 19-23 at Fairdale because of health issues. Bret Saxton also served as acting head coach during that tournament, leading the Shamrocks to a 3-1 record and fifth-place finish.
